Gosh this book is awful. I can't recall how this book made it's way to me - I've had in on my shelf for years and years, and finally got around to it. I am so glad that I did not read it early in my marriage, as I assume was it's intended purpose.

While there are one or two true & helpful things in this book, by and large it's oppressive and stifling. Most infuriating is Elliot's selective application of these attributes of God's design. She states in one place that the representations of masculinity and femininity are cultural, and that in certain life situations they may need to be reshuffled, but elsewhere states quite boldly we cannot "experiment or tamper with" they way we live out the natures of our genders. Which is it? Are they flexible to meet the cultural and situational need, or are they immutable and always must be maintained, strictly?

Elliot enforces a tired, strict, non-original binary approach to gender that speaks more to her own indoctrination within a patriarchal and white supremacy culture than it does to Scripture and God's desires for your marriage. While it's clear that this collection of thoughts (written as a present for her own daughter who is to be married) is laced with love, both for her daughter and God, I can't in good conscience recommend this to anyone.
