Excellent series that brings up a lot of philosophical questions about the concepts of free will, human nature, the definition of what is humane, and so much more. 

In each book of this trilogy I worried and half expected I wasn't going to like the characters or the direction of the story (the time lapses were often jarring), yet each volume drew me in and made me empathize and relate to characters I thought I had nothing in common with. 

The creativity of this series and the concepts it plays with are fascinating and delightful. I enjoyed volumes 1 and 2 much more than I expected. The perspectives of the construct characters was also much better done that I expected. 

There is bleakness and optimism, stark honesty and depth in all of Octavia Butler's writing, but it is especially apparent in this series, in which there is no black and white, no hero or villain, just questions and perspectives.
