In Hilda and the Stone Forest, Hilda and her mom are at odds. Hilda, ever the adventurer, doesn't want to spend much time with her mother, and constantly fibs about where she is going. Mom eventually has enough and grounds Hilda. However, she tries to escape her room with the house spirit, but mom intervenes. Turns out you shouldn't mess with spellcraft like that though, and Hilda and her mom end up in a strange stone forest. The two must work together to survive the forest and the trolls that inhabit it, and get back to civilisation! There's also rather jarring cliffhanger ending (that you are told on the back page... good job marketing!).

It seems quite a few people liked this book a bit less than its predecessors. I think that largely relates to the fact that Hilda and her mom are fighting. The two seem to have an excellent relationship in the previous books, and the strains of their move are certainly showing. Hilda herself is a bit of a brat, not willing to think about her mom's feelings and constantly lying about her whereabouts. It makes the narrative feel a bit less innocent than before, but it also shows some growth for the characters and the plot. Should the next book deal with these issues adequately, I think it was a good move on Pearson's part.

Ha! I figured this wasn't the first one in the series. Just picked it up randomly from the library. I really liked it though and definitely want to read more. Excited to see it on Netflix next year.
