It's a fantastic story of love, but also the idea of greatness. What does it mean to be great, and what should you give up of yourself and your personal happiness for it. The reading was smooth as butter and everything was amazing from beginning to end.

I was lured in by the curt writing style. It perhaps would be more fitting for a slightly shorter book, admittedly, but it did lend a sort of page-turning, rapid-read quality to this story.

It was particularly interesting to see a renowned character, Odysseus, is basically a bad guy when viewed through someone else's eyes. His clever ploys seek to destroy the love Patroclus and Achilles hope to have, all in the name of another quest neither of these two lovers give a damn about. We all know he's going to have his way; yet another tragedy among many, here.

I enjoyed this book a lot and I'd be curious to check out what else Madeline Miller has written. This was a very nice way to start 2026 for me.

This book is beautifully written. The language and detail help transport you into this tragic love story about a Greek warrior and his life partner. I’m honestly surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. There were a few times that the listing of names made me feel like I was reading Leviticus 😂, but I’m not overly well versed in Greek mythology and I did listen to it on audiobook.

Bagian paling berkesan adalah ketika Patroclus meninggal, Achilles—kekasihnya— teramat berduka sehingga ia membunuh Hector, pangeran Troya yang menjadi penyebab kematian Patroclus. Dan juga orang-orang disekitarnya, yang juga sangat berduka atas kepergian Patroclus, terutama Briseis. Bagian percakapan antara Achilles dan Briseis pasca kematian Patroclus terasa amat emosional dan menusuk relung hati. Secara keseluruhan cerita, ini sangat indah sekaligus tragis. Terasa sangat indah ketika melihat begitu banyaknya cinta Patroclus kepala Achilles, sehingga ia rela melakukan apa saja untuk kekasih hatinya.
