The Deserters

seemed a stretch too convoluted and i am normally the last person to wish a book was longer but i think the decision to combine two separate narratives in a book that's already quite short was perhaps a beat too ambitious. the prose is undeniably beautiful but it almost gets lost in how the narratives are forced to be paced. it's kind of like we're rushing to go nowhere? like i get the premise and where it was trying to lead but it kind of felt like i am a baby bird who was thrust out the nest like no really you got it you can fly!! except i lowkey couldn't so i'm just left free falling wishing i had been given like maybe a few dozens of pages more in guidance
