This book is part of a series that tells the history of medieval France as a story, which is why the reader knows some of what will happen (and the titles are spoilers in some of the books, which is sort of weird). 

However, Maurice Druon is capable of describing events in a way that makes the reader curious to find out how the characters actions are linked.
I admit that I didn't find the beginning that exciting, but by the middle of the book, as the plot thickens and the political dispute intesifies, the narrative gets quicker and more interesting. Like in the previous books of the series, the ending left me with a desire for the next book. 

What I don't like about the series so far is that the books are very short and light, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied.
