I would probably have liked it as a child, but for me as an adult the story felt too predictable and thin.

The first book in a brilliant fantasy quartet. Feisty Sandry has been orphaned by the plague, and sent to a convent suitable for a girl of her noble birth. She hates it. Her strange magical powers are breaking out all over the place, but it takes a great mage to spot that she needs training. And Sandry is not the only child mage around the Circle Sea. Four massively talented misfits are soon gathered at the Winding Circle temple - and together their powers are incredible.

The first book in a series should encourage you to read the rest. This book, for me, does not do that. I think the structure hurts it quite a lot, as it shifts the perspective character around so that we spend time more or less equally with all four kids. In most markets, the title of this book is Sandry’s Book, which sets up an expectation that Sandry will be the main character. I don’t feel she was. She does one thing at the end I guess? But mostly this book feels like setup for the series and very little actually happens in it. I mean very little. 

As with other Tamora Pierce books I’ve read, it is well written and I think if I’d discovered her as a child she’d probably have been my favourite author. Alas, I’m an adult and with this particular book, there’s not a lot there for me.

Except Sandry’s sass. That, I like.

I love this book. I love this book so much that sometimes I start smiling so hard that I make my face hurt. And every time I read/listen to it again, I LOVE IT EVEN MORE.

I love Tamora Pierce and I think she is a brilliant writer. This series so far, though, hasn't gripped me as much as her other works. I love Kel and Alanna they are strong and adventurous and were amazing for me as I was growing. They fostered my love of reading. I don't know if it's just because I 'm older now, but the characters in this book weren't as enthralling. 

The Good:
•	Unique forms of magic!!
•	World building
•	Showing love and care to small children that have been through tough times 
•	Short and sweet, super quick read 

The Bad: 
•	Found it a bit childish, but I can’t really be upset about it since it is geared towards a younger audience 
•	Plot didn’t seem to have any real issues, the main “problem” was at the very end and was quickly resolved
•	So short there was almost no meat to the story


Overall, Sandry's Book was enjoyable and I will continue the series as a supplement to other things I'm reading, but I really hope they pick up. I think there is a lot of potential for the friendship between characters to grow, and that's what I'm looking for to happen.

I wish i would have physically read the first book in this series because some of the world building flew over my head. But i really did love all of these characters so much. I def became super invested towards the end of the book. I can't wait to learn more about this characters. I really can't choose a favorite character but I loved the interaconnections between the lead characters. I loved the world alot and hope the next books expand on it!
