This is hands down the best crime series I've ever read and re-reading this first volume I have to say, it's quite impressive how well-crafted it was from the very beginning. 
I've re-read this first book this month because they released the audiobook read by Titus Welliver, who plays Harry Bosch on the Amazon TV show, and it was an amazing experience. I just watched season 1 of the show and loved Wellliver's portrayal of Harry Bosch, and he was an excellent narrator. I hope the re-do the whole series with Welliver as the narrator, I will for sure listen to all of them if they do.
Harry Bosch feels so real, and from this very first book you realize that Connelly thought about his character for a long time. He has a rich background, Connelly distills hints about many themes that will be developed in later books (family, being part of the foster system, wanting to figure out what happened to his mother, butting heads with internal affairs, Harry's aversion for political moves, his relationships to women). It was already all there, yet it didn't feel crowded. Connelly is a master at working with plot, pacing, distilling clues, and making the reader guess. He is also the best author I've read in the procedural genre (his knowledge of the ins and outs of police procedure is astonishing). And Harry is my favorite cop ever. 
If you're interested, there's an excellent interview of Michael Connelly and Titus Welliver at the end of the audiobook, it was extremely interesting to hear their opinions on many aspects of the series.

Really good! After book 1 I found Harry to be not quite what I’d seen on TV but the characterisation in the second book is closer to what’s on screen. Am I a philistine for wanting the book to be like the tv series? Absolutely!

My favorite Bosch books are "Concrete Blonde" and "Trunk Music". "The Black Box" joins them. The setting starts in the 1992 riots in LA. A female Danish journalist is killed in an alley during the riots. As a cold case 20 years later, Bosch tries to figure out why she is in the U.S., and what really drew her to LA at this time. It was thought that she was following a war crimes investigation. It turns out it was for a very different reason. One of Connelly's best Bosch books in a while.

Whole bunch of cliches but well written nonetheless. Suspense was a little obvious but it may just be my general wide reading of the genre that prepared me for it. Good past time.

I appreciate a good thriller so much. Micheal Connelly, according to a dear bookish friend, is always reliable when it comes to delivering solid thrills. In Black Ice too, he delivers efficiently. Bosch is a seriously good character, so well written, as are most of the characters in the story. At no point did I feel like plot points were out of place or unrealistic. Connelly is clearly an observant man, looking to tell deeper stories through his preferred genre of crime. It's a great read when your brain is overworked from top of the line literature - it's a top of the line crime noir.
