Michael Redhill's new novel will be set in Toronto, tracing human lives through its growth from a frontier town to a major Western city. In the present, an archaeological dig creates tensions between developers and conservationists; in the past a photographer attempts to freeze time in an exhaustive series of photographs of the late-19th century city; and a surviving diary links present and past in a stunning exploration of how memory and history form place and individual character.
