It took me a while to really get into this book. The first 40 pages or so were a slog and I wasn't looking forward to seeing this book on my nightstand, so I'd pick up something else instead. But then the story really started to pick up steam once Duddy started working as a waiter, where his ambitions and schemes really took over. I had a real love/hate relationship with Duddy...just when you think he's going to turn his life for the better, he settles into his gangster destiny and the bits of good in Duddy are gone. Funny, enjoyable and it really had me craving a smoked meat sandwich. Thankfully, I'll be in Montreal later this summer.
