This book is the heart-wrenching conclusion to Felix's story. Set two years and two months after the horrifying tragedy at the end of Then, After follows Felix in the final year of the war as he becomes a part of the resistance and discovers he has surgeon's hand and a doctors instinct. An excellent end to the quartet of stories. I read the books in the order Mr. Gleitzman wrote them but I think they have more resonance and impact when read Once, Then, After, Now. I need to reread Now to better understand some of the anger and grief Felix was experiencing as an old man. 

After all Felix has seen and done, After surviving this long, After making his way across Poland and Germany, he has become a man. His childhood was war and death camps and resistance camps and hidey holes under horse stalls. Felix is a man and realizes grown up decisions are even harder to make that the impossible choices he already was making.

I feel this set of novels relate to middle school kids more than any other holocaust book in my library. They identify with Felix, Zelda, Barney, Gabriek, and all the others who try to help Felix survive the war. superbly written.
