I read this because I loved the film and wanted to read the original story. The original is completely different than the film, plot wise. Ferdinand himself is the same. The sweet bull who'd rather smell flowers than fight. 
I read this out of curiosity. I didn't expect anything deep(plotwise, the message is great and needed) as it is a children's book, but it is sweet and I think if you had children that were 3 or younger they'd enjoy it and would be perfect for them.

One of my favorite childhood books. I loved that Ferdinand just wanted to sit quietly and smell the flowers. He's a lover, and I love him.

Also, the spare, black and white line illustrations are lovely and so evocative of Spain. Maybe this is why I've traveled there twice.
