Everyone’s individual choices: dreams and promises. Altogether, packaged up into funds, they amounted to a literal, collective hope for the future.

Had she ever truly opposed capitalism, or merely her own disenfranchisement? Not that the distinction mattered, he supposed, as long as the grievance could be monetised.

opinions had felt ironically held back then. Such vigorous arguments were just sport.

What would their wider social circle, the stylishly semi-idle, make of such a ‘job’?

why does our society tolerate these greedy, pitiful men?

It takes either a lot of empathy or, I guess, a personality disorder. 

I am probably "underrating" this book at 3 stars, being more of an enjoyment based opinion than a proper analysis of what Universality has to give and inspire, and taking into account I read it at a bad moment to real feel much fun. On the other hand, writing this review now, I can clearly remember moments I considered showed great skill and intellectual depth. If at the halfway point I was feeling this was more an emergence from 2025 culturespeak than a properly conceptualized story, by the end I am sure that it is that, not so much as a random occurrence but as a good demonstration of what "is happening".

I ended the book remembering, of all things, existentialism. I find some reward in trying to go from that 20th century defense of living in good faith to current group identity based worldviews and opinion-flows. In Universality, Brown gives the reader an enticing initial mystery, with enough absurdity to be almost believable, and then explores the dreams, illusions, earnestness and conformism, ideologies and self-serving populisms of many possible persons and groups out of the current media landscape, be it a young cooperativist, be it an old hack of an author, the friend group or the festival audience, the family or the street.

In conclusion, I shall read Assembly.

i'm a big fan of character studies with minimal plot, so i'm a little surprised by my own decision to deduct half a star, but i think the non-story quality is going to put off a lot of readers. which is a real shame, because the characters are brilliant and the satire so precise that it's often hard to stomach, even if you know what to expect. like assembly, it will reveal more of itself on a second or third read, and its modest length is perfect for that.

hilariously scathing read of the politically loudest voices of our time, more than anything i think this really shows, that despite differences in perspectives, most people make their problems everybody else's problems long as they get to externalise their stream of consciousness

Hannah, a struggling freelance journalist, is tasked with discovering the motive behind the attack, uncovering an entwined web consisting of an amoral banker, an iconoclastic columnist, and a radical anarchist movement. The mystery and exposé are only the superficial elements, however, as the remaining sections delve into the repercussions of the ‘A Fool’s Gold’ article, examining how those involved were affected and ultimately victimised themselves. Through a nuanced approach, Natasha navigates topics of capitalism, privilege, and meritocracy, offering perspectives from different sectors of the political spectrum to emphasise contemporary socio-economic discourse in Britain. She compactly articulates how words are weapons and hold immense power; they are impactful when shaping public perception, easily manipulated and sensationalised. 

Utilising pretentious characters and ambiguous discussions on current affairs, Natasha has contrived a satirical social commentary dissecting the hierarchical system, media narratives, and cultural rhetoric. It is concise and witty, focusing on the power of language through a voyeuristic lens that perfectly encapsulates modern Britain.
