This was a creepy good read. Summer is kidnapped by a man who calls himself "Clover". He renames Summer as Lily to go with his other "flowers": Rose, Poppy and Violet--three more girls he has kidnapped and keeps in his cellar. His goal is to keep his "family" together forever. Sometimes, he brings girls off the streets into the cellar to kill them to rid the world of some evil. Summer's family and boyfriend continue to look for her in the hopes of finding her alive. Will they do so in time? A sequel to this book, which I already ordered, is coming out next year. High school and adult readers alike will enjoy this gripping thriller.

           For the most part I enjoyed this book! I really had to find out what happened and how summer escaped the cellar!!! But there were a lot of parts I wished were better. There’s a lot of repetition to a point where I was like “I get it! Clover is a psycho who constantly kills people!” I’m not kidding when I say they have multiple scenes where Clover comes down the stairs and kills a girl in front of the “flowers” and then leaves them to clean his murder. 

 Trigger warning though! They do talk about Rape and the main character, Summer does get raped in this book. They don’t go in details of that event, but it was made clear that it happened. 
 
 The main thing that made be finish this book faster was summer’s boyfriend’s commitment of finding her. I mean if I got kidnapped I’d hope I have a boyfriend who didn’t rest until I was found. I don’t know how realistic the idea of him searching for months is, but I loved his determination. I do think the ending could have been better. On one hand, I love the fact that the boyfriend put it together and ultimately found summer. However, the majority of the book is Summer thinking of ways to escape. I wish she could’ve found that way and escaped the creep. But again, her boyfriend’s determination is 10/10. Overall, I gave it 3 stars, because I liked it, but it definitely wasn’t my favorite book.

Great story and plot. However the writing itself felt more on the level of grade school's. I normally wouldn't mind, but this is most definitely a young adult's book. The language and story are not meant for young children.

This was the first book that I ever read by Natasha Preston and I loved it. I originally found it on Wattpad and I loved it. I bought a paper copy of the book so I could read it as much as I wanted to without having to look on my phone for hours at a time. I definitely recommend this book!

This book was fine. I enjoyed the premise and enjoyed Summers dialogue and how she changed throughout the kidnapping. I did however dislike the ending. I thought it was very anticlimactic. I also disliked Lewis. He was just boring and whiny.

I first read this on Wattpad then bought the book and reread it again and absolutely loved it both times. 
16 year old Summer Robinson has been taken by a stranger and forced to use a different name, Lily. Summer flings into the hope that someone will find her, along with 3 other girls who have been in the cellar much longer than she has, summer if forced to participate in the sickening show of pretending to be the kidnappers family. 
The writing is so vivid I could clearly picture the story in my head that will forever haunt me. 
I loved the fact that it was told in alternating povs, Summer, her boyfriend and Colin (the kidnapper). 
Overall this book was emotionally gripping and well plotted and fast paced.

           Ugh that was so perfect. I enjoyed it so much. Lewis was the sweetest person ever his love for Summer was so perfect and pure. Unlike Clover's messed up mind and his idea of a perfect family. Like no. That messed up idiot. But like poor Violet #1 and Violet #2 like that sucked and ROSE. That was not needed. But like it was. Poppy was strange in the beginning but she was the best towards the end. And just yes. I loved it so much. You know minus the crazy insane Clovers chapters.

¿Cuál es vuestro libro preferido de Natasha Preston?

Tenía muchas ganas de leer algo de Natasha Preston y en particular este libro, ahora que me estoy aficionando al thriller. Estaba segura de que sería uno de esas historias que te pone la piel de gallina, pero no ha llegado a tanto.

La gran mayoría de las situaciones de "El sótano" me han parecido repetitivas, provocando las mismas reflexiones en la protagonista una y otra vez (hasta el punto de escuchar la misma frase calcada hasta tres veces). Creo que habría vuelto a abandonarlo de no ser por la diversidad de puntos de vista; siendo Clover mi preferido, ya que era el personaje más interesante de todo el libro.

Toda la trama es inquietante y algunas escenas consiguieron provocarme escalofríos, pero para mi gusto no profundizaba suficiente es lo aspectos más terroríficos; entre ellos, la relación de Clover con su madre.

Las últimas páginas han sido completamente aburridas, a excepción de la escena del cementerio. Yo habría cerrado la historia bastante antes.

Me ha dado mucha rabia lo que ha ocurrido con Clover y me ha dado la impresión de que la autora preparaba una segunda parte (lo he comprobado y lo único que he encontrado es una historia "publicada por Wattpad", cosa que no entiendo mucho).

A pesar de que no ha cumplido todas mis expectativas tengo muchas ganas de leer algo más de Natasha Preston. ¿Alguna recomendación?

The Cellar by Natasha Preston was a very interesting read. I haven't read another book like this one. It's very dark in nature, but also light enough that it can be read by a YA audience. It should be read with caution though because it does feature abuse, murder, and the mention of rape.

In general, I feel that the author handled the darker aspects of the story well, and I thought she showed, not told, how the girls feared their captor. I also felt that Preston did a great job of portraying Stockholm's Syndrome and the effects of that on Rose and then on the other girls living there. I also liked getting into Clover's mind - I hated him, but I thought it added an extra layer to the story.

Overall, the plot of the story, I thought was well written. What I had a huge problem with was that I really didn't like any of the characters. There were two I liked, but because of how the story was written... it was just hard to relate (view spoiler)[I liked both of the Violets, but they also both died, which added an extra layer of disappointment for me - that the two girls who really fought (not just talked about fighting like Summer) both died (hide spoiler)]. Yes, I felt horrible for Summer and wanted her out of the situation, as I did with the other girls, but I didn't like how she was written or portrayed. And I really didn't like Lewis either. It just kind of ruined the story for me.

Again, this was a pretty good story. It was lacking in the character department for me, but I still think it was a good read. I would highly recommend the book. I also think it's a good awareness of what can happen psychologically to a kidnapped victim if you don't know. I would recommend this book.

           Firstly I have to say that this book was like wow- it was so emotional and I loved the different perspectives that it was written in. The concept was also something I had not come across quite in the same way before which was refreshing! Prepare yourself for this gripping dive into a cereal killer, kidnapper and abusers mind and the twisted story of Lily/Summer.

I like to go reread this every so often. Having read this on Wattpad ages ago, it's so nice to see someone gain recognition in a different way. This book while isn't my favorite or the best, I still appreciate it. It was full of cliches and something I feel I have read multiple times beforehand. But something always draws me in. I personally loved the fact that I got to be inside everyone's head. I got everyone's point of view.
