big win for doors in the doors v wheels debate!

ok this was SO sweet and so fun. absolutely adored every second of it and i feel like i could read a whole long series about this sorta magical-realism sci-fi world, but i also really enjoy how it was contained and what the author did here. the premise and setup was so interesting, but also i loved seeing cole's friend group, and slowly getting to know all the characters. i totally teared up when cole was telling malik being bi is allowed 😭 my heart 😭

i think my only thing holding me back from 5 stars was that it was a bit slow to get really into the meat of the ~plot~ which i don't think is bad, but was maybe just a little too slow for me. i appreciate what the author did here but i think because he chose to pace the beginning slower, the end felt a little rushed. i didn't have like burning questions but more like i just wanted to see so much more and learn so much more about what was revealed in like the last 20% of the book? i don't think it was bad and in fact i think it was a very good balance for a standalone but i guess i just wanted to be so much longer in this world that sort of exploded open at the end bc i'm at my core a magic/fantasy ho.

but that being said this book was a joy and i really really liked it. def recommend. it's books like this that make me wish i'd read/had this when i was a teenager bc god this was seriously written for teenage me.

I actually really enjoyed my time reading this book and I loved the premise of this. I just had two problems with it. The first one being that I felt like the transporting thing wasn't explained well enough. Towards the end we got more about it but I feel like we only scraped the surface of it. I honestly wouldn't have minded this if this book had a sequel but as it doesn't I'm just a bit dissapointed because obviously that whole thing is so interesting. The second thing I had a problem with was the balance between the romance and the teleporting because it was just of. We would go chapters with barely mentioning the transporting but full of developing the romance and then chapters full of the transporting issues but no mention of the love interest at all. But yeah, overall I enjoyed my time reading this, especially with all the queer conversations. I loved all the LGBTQ+ aspects in it. It was a small part of the story and could have been left out because it isn't that important to the overall story but I just loved it.
