 I really enjoyed this story and thought it was a great addition to the series. I only gave it a 4.5 because I felt the first book was more deep and well developed. Ripley could be a bit annoying at times too but I get the reason she acts the why she did. I pictures her as

Heaven and Earth is definitely my favorite of this series. The push and pull between Ripley and Mac was so much fun. Ripley is the tenacious deputy sheriff on Three Sisters Island who is determined to ignore her magical ability. Mac is the adorable genius scientist determined to unlock Ripley's heart. I loved that the romance did not follow the typical damsel in distress / dominant hero troupe. Not that Mac was wimpy or anything; he just used his brain power first and foremost. And really, who doesn't love a charming, hunky scientist? 

What I did not like about this book and the series in general was Mia's character. She is just too damn perfect. Too effortlessly amazing at everything she does. Too powerful. Too gorgeous. So gorgeous that every male with a pulse drools after her no matter how committed they are to their own relationships. She is an ultimate Mary Sue. I don't feel the need to reread the third book in the series since it focuses on her, and I remember it well enough. But aside from Mia's attention-stealing moments, the story was charming. This is definitely a fun beach read.

I wont lie, I think that Nell's story was much more fleshed out than Ripley's story. I still really enjoyed reading it but there was definitely more things that took me out of the story because they are awfully dated. I hate that Ripley loses some of her badassness purely because she finds a guy she falls in love with. It's not like a you soften my edges way either... It's more like pigeon holing someone feeling. That a woman must want a husband and kids kind of way.

I think that the romance was a little lacking. It feels weird how one moment they are bickering and then BAM Ripley and him are in a relationship and confessing love and it just didn't quite feel believable. 

I am still excited to read the last book to see how it all wraps up.

I'm a closet Nora Roberts aficionado, and I love to binge sometimes, especially in the summer. I believe I read this series a way long time ago, but we received these gorgeous new editions at my library so I'm giving it another go.

I also recently finished her Cousin's O'Dwyer series, set in Ireland, and man do these two series share a lot of plot points (even magical incantations). I'm pretty over "so mote it be." BUT, that said, I vastly prefer this series as Roberts spends far less time with the old Salem witches the modern women are based off of, and a lot less time on the magic. Roberts excels when she focuses on characters.

Of all the Roberts I've read, Ripley and Mac may be my favorite couple. I mean, come on, the guy's name is Mack Booke (hah), and he's a super sexy, ripped, clutzy, absent minded professor, historian, and all around sweet guy who is dynamite in the sack because he studied it. He's also perfect for snarky, sarcastic, fire brand Ripley who needs an easy going guy who isn't going to take shit from her. 

I think these two had the best moment of "break-up" in any romance novel I've ever read (you know, the point where you worry that your people aren't going to have their HEA). Ripley decides to dump Mac to protect him from herself, and he just pretends to go along with it, and it lasts about one page before they are on each other, and figuring out the other drama of the book. Perfect! Just what I like.
