Não dá para escrever uma review deste livro em inglês. Foi o meu primeiro contacto com a escrita da Dulce Maria Cardoso, e que belo contacto. Apaixonei-me completamente pela escrita da autora, pela transição tão mágica que faz entre pensamentos e diálogos e pela maneira como nos envolve nesta história. A temática dos Retornados não me é muito familiar, mas faz parte da história de muitas famílias portuguesas. Ler sobre este tempo do ponto de vista de um rapaz de 15 anos, que ainda está a descobrir este mistério que é a vida e que, ao mesmo tempo, se vê catapultado para um mundo que lhe é demasiado novo foi muito interessante. Recomendo muito este livro.

For many, this is a powerful coming-of-age story, set against the violent backdrop of decolonisation and the return to an old homeland. For me, this is a book that delivers what it should deliver. It took me 3 months to finish this one, but the plot is there, the writing is there, for so long I tried to understand why it took me so long. Well, dear reader, this story starts in Luanda in 1975, when the colonial war came to an end, after been ranging for at least a decade, when the Portuguese dictatorship came to an end, so did the war.

Our narrator, a 15 year old boy, filled with excitement and uncertainty, shows us how it was to grow up in Luanda during the war, and how were they received when they return to Portugal. Between not knowing if his father is still alive, his mother mental health, facing discrimination and his own personal struggles, Rui will deliver everything just right.

Now on my personal thoughts, I tried to show sympathy for the narrator, and remind myself that his "views" are supposed to be the same ones as must people had back in 75, but sometimes I just wanted to punch him, others to comfort him and then punch him again. Dulce delivers a character so rich, that even if you don't agree with his way of seeing the world, you will bleed with him.
