2007-ലാണ് ഓർഹൻ പാമുക്കിന്റെ "Snow" വായിക്കുന്നത്. അന്ന് വരെയുള്ള വായനയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു വഴി തിരിയലായിരുന്നു അത്. മധ്യ-പൗരസ്ത്യ ദേശത്തെ എഴുത്തുകാരെ തിരയാനുള്ള പ്രേരണയും. യാദൃശ്ചികമായി, പാമുക്കിന് തന്നെയും അതൊരു വലിയ മാറ്റത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കമായിരുന്നു എന്നത് പിന്നീട് അയാളുടെ മുൻ-പിൻകാലങ്ങളിലെ പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൂടെ പോകുമ്പോൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. ബൊലാഞ്ഞോയുടെ "സാവേജ് ഡിറ്റക്റ്റീവ്സ്" വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ അയാളുടെ പിൽക്കാല നോവലുകളുടെ പല സൂചനകളും, കഥാശകലങ്ങളും അതിൽ കണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ കഴിയുമെന്ന് പറയുന്നതുപോലെ Snow-യിൽ Museam of Innocence (ആ പേര് തന്നെ ഒരിടത്തു ആഖ്യാതാവ് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്) കൈകാര്യം ചെയുന്ന happiest moment എന്ന അടിസ്ഥാന ആശയത്തിന്റെ പൊട്ടും പൊടിയും, Strangeness In My Mind -ലെ ആത്മീയആചാര്യന്റെ ആദിരൂപം, പാമുക്കിന്റെ പുതിയ നോവലായ "Red-Haired Woman-ന്റെ ആധാരമായ ഈഡിപ്പസ് / സൊഹ്‌റാബ് കഥകളും (Red എന്ന നോവലിലും ഇതുണ്ട്), ഇതിലുണ്ട്. അത് മോശമെന്നോ ഈ നോവലുകൾ ആവർത്തനമെന്നോ അതിനർത്ഥമില്ല, മറിച്ച്, പാമുക് എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ എത്ര സൂക്ഷ്മതയോടെയാണ് അയാളുടെ കഥാലോകം നിർമ്മിച്ചെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത് എന്നത് പത്തുവർഷത്തെ വായനക്ക് ശേഷം മനസ്സിലാകുന്നുണ്ട് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞതാണ്. പരിഭാഷകളിൽ പലപ്പോഴും ഈ നോവലുകളിലെ ടർക്കിഷ് ഭാഷയുടെ സ്വാഭാവികമായ banter നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു പോകുന്നത് പല നിരൂപകരും വായനക്കാരും എടുത്തു പറയാറുണ്ട്, ആ ഒരു സവിശേഷത ഒളിഞ്ഞും തെളിഞ്ഞും പ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്ന ഒരു കൃതി കൂടിയാണിത്. തുർക്കിയിലെ(അതുപോലുള്ള മറ്റു രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെയും) രാഷ്ട്രീയ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഏറെക്കുറെ കൃത്യമായ ചിത്രം കൂടി ഇതിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭിക്കും. കൂട്ടത്തിൽ പാമുക്കിനെതിരെ ഭരണകൂടവും ജനങ്ങളും തിരിഞ്ഞതും ഈ നോവൽ വന്നതോടുകൂടിയാണ് - എന്നാൽ പാമുക് നിശ്ശബ്ദനായിരുന്നിട്ടില്ല എന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല ഇപ്പോഴും തന്റെ ആശയങ്ങളും അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളുമായി തുർക്കിയിൽ (അമേരിക്കയിൽ കഴിയുന്നെന്ന് വിമർശകർ) തന്നെ കഴിയുന്നു. 

പന്ത്രണ്ടു വർഷത്തെ വിദേശവാസത്തിനുശേഷം Kars എന്ന കിഴക്കൻ തുർക്കിയിലെ നഗരത്തിൽ എത്തുന്ന Ka എന്ന കവിയുടെ കഥയാണ് ഒറ്റ നോട്ടത്തിൽ Snow - അവിടെ തുടർച്ചയായി നടന്നു വരുന്ന പെൺകുട്ടികളുടെ ആത്മഹത്യകളെപ്പറ്റി ലേഖനമെഴുത്താണ് അയാളുടെ പ്രഖ്യാപിത ലക്‌ഷ്യം. എന്നാൽ അയാൾ കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്നവരെ നോക്കിയാൽ - ഇസ്ലാമിസ്റ്റുകൾ, റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കൻസ്, പഴയകാല കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ്സ്, ഫാസിസ്റ്റുകൾ, മോഡറേറ്റ് ഇസ്ലാമിസ്റ്റുകൾ, പോലീസ്, പട്ടാളം - തുർക്കിയുടെ തന്നെ ഒരു പരിച്‌ഛേദമാണ് Kars എന്ന് കാണാനാകും. അയാളുടെ ഉള്ളിലിരിപ്പ് ഒരു മോഡറേറ്റ് ഇസ്ലാമിസ്റ്റായ Muhtar-നോട് വിവാഹ ബന്ധം വേർപ്പെടുത്തിയ തന്റെ പഴയ കാമുകിയായ Ipek -നെ വീണ്ടെടുക്കുക എന്നതുകൂടിയാണ്. കനത്ത മഞ്ഞു‌വീഴ്ചയിൽ ആ സ്ഥലം കുറച്ചു ദിവസങ്ങൾ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടുപോകുന്നു (സൈബീരിയയുടെ അയൽപ്രദേശമാണിത്). പെൺകുട്ടികളുടെ ആത്മഹത്യകൾ പർദ്ദ നിരോധനത്തിനോടുള്ള എതിർപ്പാണെന്നാണ് ഇസ്ലാമിസ്റ്റുകളുടെ പ്രചാരണം. അധികാരികളും പൊതുബോധവും എല്ലാം പർദ്ദക്കെതിരാണ്. എന്നാൽ ഇസ്ലാമിസ്റ്റുകൾ അത് പെൺകുട്ടികളുടെ സ്വാഭിമാനവുമായാണ് ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്. പെൺകുട്ടികളോട് പർദ്ദ അഴിക്കാൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട വിദ്യഭ്യാസ ഡയറക്ടർ Ka-യുടെ സാമീപ്യത്തിൽ തന്നെ കൊലചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. അവിടന്നങ്ങോട്ട് അയാൾ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളുടെ നടുവിലേക്ക് എടുത്തെറിയപ്പെടുകയാണ്. ആദ്യം Muhtar-നെ (സഹപാഠിയും, കവിയുമാണ് അയാൾ) കാണുന്ന അയാൾ അവിടെ നിന്ന് പോലീസ്, പ്രാദേശിക പത്ര ഓഫിസ്, ഇസ്ലാമിക ഭീകരൻ എന്ന് മുദ്ര കുത്തപ്പെട്ട Blue, ആത്മീയാചാര്യനായ Saadettin Cevhe, പ്രധാന കഥാപത്രമായ actor-revolutionary, Sunay തുടങ്ങി ഒരു പറ്റം ആളുകളുടെ വലയത്തിൽ പെട്ടുപോകുന്നു. മഞ്ഞിലും സംഘർഷത്തിലും ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ഏക സന്തോഷം വർഷങ്ങളായി അയാളെ കയ്യൊഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്ന കാവ്യദേവതയുടെ കടാക്ഷമാണ് - കാമുകിയുടെ അടുത്തിരുന്നും, പോലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷനിലിരുന്നും, ഒരു ടോയ്‌ലെറ്റിൽ വച്ചുമൊക്കെയായി പത്തൊമ്പതു കവിതകൾ അയാൾ എഴുതുന്നു. അതിനിടയിൽ നോവലിസ്റ്റ് തന്നെ ആഖ്യാതാവായി രംഗപ്രവേശം ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. Sunay-യുടെ നാടകക്കമ്പനിയുടെ സ്റ്റേജിൽ വച്ച് Ka അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന, നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടുപോയ ഒരു കവിത പരിപാടിയുടെ വീഡിയോകളിൽ നിന്ന് ആഖ്യാതാവ് പകർത്തിയെടുക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ അയാളുടെ കവിതകളുള്ള നോട്ട്ബുക് നോവലിസ്റ്റിന് കണ്ടെടുക്കാനാവുന്നില്ല - അതിനായി അയാൾ Kars-ലും ജർമനിയിലും ഒക്കെ പോകുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും.

Necip- ന്റെ മരണത്തിനുശേഷം കഥയിലെ അവന്റെ സ്ഥാനം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുന്നത് Fazil ആണ്. ആഖ്യാതാവായി നോവലിസ്റ്റ് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നതോടെ ka-യുടെ സ്ഥാനം അയാളും. ഈയൊരു transition വളരെ സൂക്ഷ്മമാണ് നോവലിൽ - അന്വേഷണങ്ങൾക്കൊടുവിൽ Kars -ലെത്തുന്ന അയാൾ Ipek -നെക്കണ്ട് പരവശനാകുന്നുണ്ട് (“What if I died here, what if I declared my love to Ïpek, what if I just stayed here to look out the window?”). കൗതുകകരമായ ഒരു നിമിഷമാണ് അത്. 

പത്തുവർഷത്തിനുശേഷം എന്റെ വായനയെ ഏറെ സ്വാധീനിച്ച എഴുത്തുകാരനെ വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ വായനക്കാരൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഞാനേറെ മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്നെനിക്കറിയാം. രണ്ടാം വായനയിൽ ആദ്യ വായനയിലെ വികാര വിചാരങ്ങൾ തോന്നാൻ വഴിയില്ലെങ്കിലും, മറ്റുനോവലുകളിൽ വിരസതയിലേക്കോ മെലോഡ്രാമയിലേക്കോ വഴുതിയേക്കാവുന്ന ഒരു കഥയെ കയ്യടക്കത്തോടെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരനെ ഇതിലെനിക്ക് കാണാനാകുന്നുണ്ട്. എന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല അയാളുടെ തന്നെ കഥാലോകത്തെ അനവധി നോവലുകളിലൂടെ ഞാൻ പിന്നീട് വായിച്ചെടുത്തിട്ടുമുണ്ട്. അപ്പോൾ അവയിലോടുന്ന പൊതുവായ ആശയങ്ങളും അവയെ കൂട്ടിയിണക്കുന്ന നൂലും എനിക്ക് കാണാനാകുന്നുണ്ട്. മൂന്നാം ലോക രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ആധുനികത/പാരമ്പര്യം, മതപരത/മതനിരപേക്ഷത തുടങ്ങിയ സംഘർഷങ്ങളേയും മറ്റു യൂണിവേഴ്സൽ ആശയങ്ങളെയും കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന, കൃത്യമായി മനുഷ്യപക്ഷത്തു നിലയുറപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന, വ്യക്തമായ രാഷ്ട്രീയമുള്ള എഴുത്തുകാരനായാണ് പാമുക് എന്റെ മുന്നിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നത്. തുർക്കി എന്ന, യൂറോപ്പിന്റെ പടിവാതിലിൽ നിന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു രാജ്യത്തെ മേൽപ്പറഞ്ഞ ദ്വന്ദങ്ങൾ എവിടെയെത്തിച്ചു എന്നത് ഇന്ന് നമുക്കറിയാം. Sunay പോലെയോ, Erdogan പോലെയോ ഉള്ള സ്വാർത്ഥരുടെ കൈകളിൽ എത്തുന്ന ഒരു നാടിന്റെ ഭാവി പ്രവചിക്കുക കൂടിയാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. വ്യക്തിപരമായി പാമുക്കിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച നോവലായും ഞാനിതിനെ കാണുന്നു.

“Neve” saiu em 2002, mas foi escrito entre abril de 1999 e dezembro de 2001, e isto é importante pelo que aconteceu a 11 setembro de 2001, um evento que marcaria a consciência do ocidente, ou melhor, a falta de consciência do ocidente para com o Médio Oriente. Depois disso os media ajudaram a que todo o ocidente se tornasse especialista em terroristas, bombas, ataques suicidas, extremismo, pobreza e pouco mais. Para compreender do que falamos, quando falamos da Turquia, Irão, Síria, Iraque, Egito, Palestina os curdos, os sunitas, etc. etc. é preciso ler, e é provável que a melhor leitura para conhecer não seja a não-ficção escrita por jornalistas e historiadores com um olhar de fora, mas antes a ficção por romancistas que ali nasceram, e sentem aquilo de que falam. Digo tudo isto para deixar claro que “Neve”, sendo um livro magnífico, requer abertura para a discussão política, e acima de tudo, para a aceitação do outro.

Pamuk trabalha a partir de uma base mágico-realista, situando os acontecimentos numa pequena vila do noroeste da Turquia, Kars, que bem podia ser imaginada, mas não o é. Kars existe, e dado o seu caráter fronteiriço tem pertencido a regimes distintos em função das vontade do tempo, ao longo de séculos. No livro, serve de palco para uma cidade tipicamente turca, na qual se debate o secularismo, ou seja o estado laico contra o estado religioso (ajuda se tivermos presente algumas ideias sobre o país, ligando o passado desenhado por Ataturk aos problemas que se vivem agora com Erdogan, ou tendo imagens de cinematografias como as de Nuri Bilge Ceylan ou Kazim Oz). O lado mágico surge pelo enquadramento criado, já que quase tudo acontece aquando de um grande nevão que deixa a cidade isolada, lançando-se a confusão entre as fações — religiosos contra laicos, que por sua vez se dividem em comunistas e nacionalistas — os habitantes e os media que os seguem. Os media são aqui fundamentais, desde logo porque o jornal da cidade prevê o futuro, ou seja cria manchetes do que vai acontecer no dia seguinte.

Pamuk vai então socorrer-se do cenário montado para sem qualquer pudor colocar o dedo na ferida, desferindo ataques pertinentes na relação entre a Europa (particularmente a Alemanha que tem sido o grande destino de muitos imigrantes turcos) e a Turquia, entre o Estado e a Religião, falando da posição da mulher nas diferentes culturas, do suicídio, da democracia, do jornalismo, da arte, questionando preconceitos e modelos mentais da realidade que todos nós vamos construindo. Por vezes quase sentimos como que Pamuk puxando-nos as orelhas, alertando para a existência de um outro. Mas Pamuk não filosofa apenas, tudo isto é muito bem acompanhado por doses racionadas de enredo, carregado de crime, amor e paixão.

A trama na narração é particularmente bem estruturada, existindo um cuidado com os detalhes que nos toca. Por exemplo, o narrador avisa sempre previamente se um personagem que entra em cena deverá morrer mais à frente, o que gera em nós um misto de sensações, como que se o autor não nos quisesses impressionar com a surpresa. Por outro lado, no que toca as redes de paixões Pamuk tira-nos o tapete, brinca com as nossas emoções, surpreende, levanta-nos a ira. Ou seja, o romance tem muito para dizer, mas nem por isso se limita a dizer, fá-lo envolvendo emocionalmente o leitor, prendendo-o àquele mundo, subjugando-o às suas necessidades. Existe um traço melancólico enfatizado pela neve e pelo isolamento da vila e das vidas de cada personagem que caracterizam a atmosfera e a tornam muito particular, por isso a meio do livro e quando fora das suas páginas, damos por nós invariavelmente a pensar “quando volto para Kars”.

A escrita impressiona, embora como o tema, não é para todos os gostos. Pamuk é bastante verborreico, e nesse sentido consegue por um lado fazer-me lembrar de autores como Jonathan Franzen, mas ao mesmo tempo e talvez ainda mais, Garcia Marquez e a sua Macondo, por toda a verborreia misturada com toda a ação constante, mais todos personagens e as suas desfocagens da realidade. “Neve” funciona como uma espécie de fábula imparável em que o protagonista, um poeta acabado de passar por uma crise de inspiração, recomeça a escrever, mas não nos fala, chega-nos por meio de um romancista, que tem o mesmo nome de Pamuk, e que está a escrever um livro sobre esse poeta. Ou seja, “Neve” é um livro de poemas, dentro de um livro sobre o autor desses poemas. Sim, existe aqui algo de pós-moderno, mas pouco, eu diria que depois do belíssimo “O Meu Nome é Vermelho” (1998) Pamuk quis fazer algo mais clássico ainda que emoldurado por artifícios pós-modernos.

“Se me meter num romance passado em Kars, gostaria de dizer ao leitor que não acreditasse em nada do que lá escreve a meu respeito ou a respeito da gente de Kars. De longe ninguém pode compreender-nos.”

Strange, almost hallucinogenic novel about (where to start?) politics, love, poetry, death, gender politics, terrorism--and more! Pamuk won the Nobel Prize for literature, and has been a target in his native Turkey for daring to discuss the Armenian holocaust and other taboo subjects. I listened to this book, and was glad I did. Had I tried to read it, I would have skimmed, and missed a lot. It's not an easy read, but it's worth reading!

I'm not sure about what I think of this novel, and that in itself is almost a perfect and complete review...
Too much confusion, and big chunks of the novel could have been torn down with no effect on the whole of it...
The same dread I have felt as I was reading le rouge et le noir, That thickness of love and jealousy, happiness and suffering... Deepening the contrasts between the extremes, I'm more inclined to light fiddlings like those of Beaudelaire, but in no way would go through this again...

You'll enjoy this book if you :

1- Live somewhere really cold (minus something kind of cold),
2- Have been subject to a double culture and can't decide which one is better for the current geopolitics,
3- Ask yourself silly existential questions everyday,
4- Are naive and believe what you see on TV,
5- Can't or don't think politics mean anything anyway,
6- Enjoy poetry you can't read - only having evasive comments about it from a wordy narrator,
7- Like authors who think of themselves as postmodern (but aren't 🤫),
8- Live in your head and never take action, with a tendency to nihilism (not good for your health), 
9- Are procrastinating and found in these 400 something pages the outlet you secretly prayed for,
10- Read other books by the author and just out of familiarity you pick this one since everyone was talking about it.

To me the black book is his masterpiece so far, I do however exclude his memoirs "Istanbul : Memories and the City", because I haven't read anything similar to it before... Telling your story through a city (a very complex one indeed)... I'm an wannabe urban theorist and can confidently say that it was a brilliant one...

I hope you found some insights here and decided to or against picking a book by Orhan Pamuk, oh and he won a Nobel Prize, took that money and built a museum for one of his books The Innocence of Memories... A miniature themed park in Istanbul, in the alleyways near Galata Tower...😁📚

Likes:
- Really enjoyed the atmosphere that is set throughout the book. It was especially great to listen to this book while Vancouver experienced its own snowstorm. All the change and chaos that the snowstorm (an ensuing road closure) brought to the city of Kars was nice to read about.
- A lot of topics are covered in this book, many of which I found interesting (esp. the conflict between religiosity and secularism that this small town was experiencing)

Dislikes:
- Not a big deal but I did not enjoy the voice audiobook narrator in the version I listened to
- At times I got lost in what was going on/who is related to who. This could be partly due to listening to the audiobook rather than reading it myself.
- I didn't feel connected to any of the characters really and did not like the character Ka much at all.
- This audiobook (and I'm assuming book as well) felt soo long. I really feel that things could have been shortened.
- Some plot points seem to be more or less inconsequential to the overall story and felt like they were not necessary nor did they add much in the grand scheme of things.
