The Canterville Ghost was Oscar Wilde’s irreverent take on Gothic Horror. The title ghost has been haunting his mansion for generations and has amounted quite the reputation for his horrors. But his reign of terror comes to a screeching halt when a pragmatic American family moved into his home. Not only are the Otises completely unfazed by his terrors, they offer the ghost practical remedies and advice: oil for his rattling chains and stain remover for his blood stains. 

The story is humorous but not laugh out loud funny. While it was entertaining, it wasn’t my favorite of Wilde’s works. Even with the snarky humor, the overall story needed a little more oomph. The ending was a bit of a copout. Nevertheless, the writing was good.

It’s short and easy to read. The Canterville Ghost is a good choice if you want something amusing and a little silly.

Endlich wird wieder mal eine klaffende Bildungslücke geschlossen. In England dürfte es schwierig sein, einen Menschen zu finden, der das Gespenst von Canterville nicht schon in der Schule gelesen hat, mir war die Kurzgeschichte bislang aber nicht bewusst untergekommen. Unbewusst wohl schon eher, denn vieles in der Geschichte kam mir aus unzähligen Geisterfilmen bekannt vor. Und “Das Buch als Magazin” ist für mich nach wie vor die schönste Art, Klassiker wieder oder überhaupt zu entdecken. Auch hier wieder ein wirklich gelungener Mix aus der Kurzgeschichte, tollen Fotos und Geschichten, die dazu passen. Ich bin schon riesig gespannt auf Band 5!

“The Canterville Ghost” ist auf jeden Fall eine entzückende unterhaltsame Kurzgeschichte, in der eine reiche amerikanische Familie ein altes englisches Landhaus inklusive spukendem Geist kauft und dorthin einzieht. Sehr zum Entsetzen des über 300 Jahre alten Geistes Sir Simon, der bislang noch jeden erfolgreich in Grund und Boden gespukt hat und mit dieser Familie erstmals an seine Grenzen stößt. Sein fürchterliches nächtliches Kettengerassel bringt sie nicht dazu, vor Schreck ohnmächtig zu werden oder wenigstens ängstliche Schreie auszustossen, nein, sie drücken ihm ein hippes amerikanisches Schmiermittel namens “Rising Sun” in die Geisterhand, mit dem er doch bitte die Ketten ölen möge, damit Ruhe herrscht in der Nacht.

Honestly when I requested this book from the library I expected a thick tome and was surprised to discover a 40-page story that would take me about half an hour to read from front to back. But I was very entertained and definitely see myself reading it to my children in the future.
