It's been a while since I read a Pearl Buck novel and now I regret I didn't return to her works earlier. She writes so well with such great empathy for her characters and her ability to get inside a culture with all its nuances is fantastic. In this story she weaves in the story of the Jewish people in China into a great story. Based on fact but with dates slightly altered to fit the tale it's above all a great story of the mingling of lives and cultures.
