I haven't read this story in 20 years. It's still an enjoyable exploration of Next Generation and crossover fiction that touches on the other Star Trek series.

This book predates Q's appearances on Voyager, with the latter canon seeming to invalidate this book. But it was still a fun read that wasn't so much about Q or about Trelane as much as this: "For all sad words of tongue and pen, The saddest are these, 'It might have been'.” Readers will have to do some mental gymnastics to keep track of three alternate timelines that weave in and out of each other. Which Jean-Luc Picard are we following now? The author does a good job of giving us clues when we need them, or leaving mysteries when appropriate. An enjoyable addition to the Star Trek library, though not a "Q" book in the strictest sense.
