Fracassi does incredible job at making you care about his characters which is a great think to hear as an author but a truly tragic thing to experience as a reader considering the events that take place. If you can’t stomach children in danger/facing death, this one is probably not for you lol

tw: anxiety, depression

I don't think this will be a review, just random personal thoughts, let's get started.

I have a huge religious childhood trauma that troubled me for a long time in my life. It happened when I was 7 and I was only able to leave it in the past at 20, I'm currently 26. It gave me anxiety and depression, which I struggle with to this day. With that being said, I think I was meant to read this book.
Boys in the Valley is a horror novel that deals with demons and possessions and sins. But it's also a coming of age. I can honestly say it was the first time I got scared while reading a book (in a good way, don't worry), I loved the characters, the pace, and the ending. It was such a nice experience, being able to enjoy a story filled with elements that in the past would have taken me straight into an anxiety attack. It felt good being scared in a fun way (that's the reason why I love horror so much), gasping in shock, going "Oh my God he didn't!" and knowing it would not trigger me.
Putting my boring life story aside, it was, in general, a really good book. I loved seeing elements from Lord of the Flies and The Troop. This is a fun and scary take on its horror subgenre. It doesn't shy away from the grotesque and from the touching and moving aspects of human life.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's interested in the horror genre.
