POV It’s 1979 you’re a student at University of Hull and it’s almost time to submit your first semester paper. You and your friend go to the library and upon entering you see a man that looks like a Victorian ghost and skulks around like a cat that can smell hereditary diseases. You’re almost finished with your essay and the man(?) shuffles by and your friend leans over and whispers to you that ‘That’s Philip Larkin he’s probably going to be the next poet laureate’ and you say ‘Who, him?’ And your friend says ‘Yeah him.’ At that moment his head turns 180 degrees and you’re filled with the most miserable thoughts imaginable. That’s how I felt reading this as a teenager and reading it now.
