Within the book's original context of the late seventies, perhaps this seemed more clever than it does now. But, now we have Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, who are much funnier. And don't rely on the cheapest possible puns, and don't write stories geared toward horny middle-school boys. One of the strangest phenomenons in fantasy, and perhaps in all of reality, is that Piers Anthony still sells tons of books. If anyone can shed some light on why, I'd love to hear it.

What a fun read. When reading I had to remind myself WHEN the book was written due to some blatant sexism in the writing (particularly in the first couple chapters). That said. the overall storyline was very engaging, and being aware of the publication date and how the genre was written at the time, I was able to overlook it. 

This story is about Bink and the world he lives in, Xanth. In Xanth you need to possess a magical talent or be exiled to the land of Mundania. The main character Bink struggles to identify his talent, so this is the story of his journey. 

If this story were written today, it would likely be written from the point of view of a 15 yo teenager as that seems to be the maturity level at the start of Bink's journey... who is said to be age 25. I feel as though the author measures maturity different in his world-building. Although Bink was very immature at the start of the story, his redeeming qualities start to shine through and at the end of the story I grew to love his loyalty to his friends and his country. Bink meets some really entertaining characters on his journey, learns about real love and encounters many exciting adventures, making this one a page turner for me. 

I read this book because my husband and my 14 yo were reading them. Overall, although it contains some blatant sexual references, there is nothing overly explicit. I will be continuing on with the series as they are passed on to me.
