This book really got in my heart. It really made me cry cause Its so relatble.

So some context: this is the first book I've read after a very sad breakup and I think this did limit my enjoyment of it. The more positive poems I couldn't love as much as I normally might. Despite that this was still a lovely read and made me tear up a couple of times, I think I just loved Pillow Thoughts 1 more.

Read 50% of the compilation before DNF'ing. This is me trying to get into poetry, and I picked what I thought would be an entry level poetry collection to begin with. And it was fine. It was cute, easy to understand, quick to read. 

But nothing of what I read captured my attention. The poetry seemed juvenile (which I guess makes sense, as the poet keeps mentioning school and going to classes), and the idealisation of romantic relationships and what should be expected of them made me feel a bit uneasy. 

Maybe I'm too old for this, maybe I would have enjoyed them back when I was 18. But I'm not 18 anymore.

Every time I think I've found the worst poetry book imaginable, I stumble across another that makes me rethink my "don't trash books" philosophy. Pillow Thoughts is dreck. Mindless, self-congratulatory trash that, for a book written about a woman's love for another woman, oddly and unfortunately supports a bunch of disgusting heteronormative bullshit about one true love. You've probably had the thoughts that this author had at one point or another. They are pretty common feelings when one is young and unwise in love. Lots of them encourage wallowing in harmful emotions that don't help you get over anyone, suggest terrible expectations for romance, and are so utterly laden with teenage melodrama that never rises about the basest expressions of hurt feels. Poetry is meant to be art in words, yet Peppernell, aside from a few mangled metaphors, never uses her medium in a creative or artful manner. Simplicity can have a beauty of its own, but I want more than Twitter-style rambles. Also, what is with these modern books that are over 20o pages long, but all the poems are less than 4 lines. Ugg... skip this one.

“You have your whole life ahead of you, no matter what age you are. Fill it with things that make you get up in the morning. Fill it with people who support who you want to be.” — Definitely needed that because as I grow older I’m realizing, woah, it’s okay not to have a plan. I’m only almost 17 (on father’s day), & I’m trying to plan a big chunk of my life, a chunk that doesn’t even supposed to be “perfect” when it’ll turn out just fine naturally.

“It’s the last day of the year and I still lose myself in good books” That’s how i felt reading this amongst a lot more good things. It’s not only about love, but finding it within when you lack it. “Anxiety is a devastating thing. No matter how many times you are told to “breathe,” it feels as though the air has all but thinned, and despite every logical reason to remain calm, you feel like a ship without its sails in the middle of a raging storm.” I wish that anxiety was taken as serious as this quote.

There were several poems that I really loved, especially the ones about LDR. However, I felt the collection as if it was a retelling of the same old ideas about love, heartbreakings, etc., without adding something new or remarkable.
