A very amusing mockery of detective novels that unfortunately doesn't stick the landing, however is most definitely worth it for the journey.

This is my first Bukowski and from my brief reading about the book, it's considered one of Bukowski's worst books. If that's the case, I really need to read the guy's other stuff ASAP because this was funny as hell. Our "hero", detective Nick Belane, is comically incompetent, quick to anger/violence, out of shape, and unable to follow any string of clues, relying almost entirely on luck. He will quite literally walk into a random bar, see its near-dead clientele blankly staring, and shout out to all of them asking if they've seen what he's looking for. For Nick, this isn't even desperation, it's seemingly normal work.

I was a big fan of the brash lead character. Nobody else really gets any time to shine and that was fine, considering this book is only ~200 pages and any other character really exists just so our lead has someone telling him where to go (as he is unable to figure that out himself). I don't believe there's much to glean from this book, I just enjoyed the amusing misadventure of detective Belane, L.A.'s worst detective.

Sadly, I will say the ending was kind of lame and you could feel the previously established energy was lost. Bukowski apparently fell ill while writing this, almost near its end. I'd say with how much of a screeching halt things come to, this illness deeply impacted his writing, which is unfortunate. Thankfully, there's enough here in the beginning to justify the trip.

I recommend "Pulp" if you're looking for something silly you can knock out in only a few sittings.
