Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley (YA)

This is a memoir, told in a "graphic novel" format, about the author's connection to food, which she had throughout her life. All of her memories are linked to food. Food is the thread that keeps her connected to the people in her life. Her father shares a love of eating good food. Her mother shares a love of cooking/baking. I also enjoyed that some of it was set in Rhinebeck, NY which is not that far away from where I live. The description of that area makes me want to drag my husband on a day trip there this summer vacation. I enjoyed this book and think foodies will as well. I borrowed this book from the public library.

This graphic novel/foodie memoir was a delight. It is amazing how a feeling or setting can be described so fully without many words. This story of how the author's childhood and early adulthood was shaped by people around her and the environment she was in that was full of food and culinary exploration and understanding is well done and wonderful. I can't wait to try the recipes included, and it makes me want to cook more, explore more and be someone that can bring people together around a table. 

This book was one of the monthly picks for the Modern Mrs Darcy book club, and I'm very grateful for it. Not sure I would have found this story otherwise. The flight pick is Mastering the Art of French Eating by Ann Mah, and I'll have to add that to my reading list soon!

Another foodie dream of a book! I loved every minute of it and will be storing it in the particular section of my heart reserved for food and food writing~

I loved this book and boy, does LK have food stories that entwine with her privileged life of travels and visits to amazing restaurants. A quick, fun read with amazing drawings....and even a few recipes that I'd like to try. I loved it!

Relish is a memoir told via memories and thoughts of food. Like all of her work, Knisley’s art and stories are expressive and vibrant, and it is easy to feel immersed in her short tales. This particular book benefits from strong, bold colouring as well. Each chapter ends with an illustrated recipe that is simple enough for readers to understand and try themselves. 

Overall, Relish is a narrative about food and the myriad of ways that it can structure one’s life and experiences. Knisley encourages people to think about where their food has come from, and to take enjoyment in the social creation and consumption of food. Such a perspective is a nice break from the increasing social anxiety surrounding food and weight, making it difficult for people to accept that food can be an important area of pleasure and social connection.

A knockout all around. A wonderfully tight premise (food as memory and story-driving force) AND glorious art that is simple yet makes you ready to eat. I've been meaning to read this for quite awhile, and I am so happy I finally did. I would buy this in a heartbeat for any young foodie.
