I started reading this one last year during my holidays because I didn't want to bring my iPad to the beach. It then found itself forgotten on my car's trunk for almost 6 months. I didn't take this long to read it because I wasn't enjoying it, far the contrary. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Yate's writing. Frank and April's story is so simple yet complex and, above all, relatable. Can't wait to finally watch the movie and make my assumptions about it.

Haha, this was sad, but also made me laugh a bunch at how horrible they are to each other. The first chapter is really funny in a really mean and nasty way, too. Kinda like MadMen, but with less witty characters. And soooo much drinking.

This book has a timeless quality. It was written in 1961 and the story takes place about the year 1955, but it could just as easily been written today. It is about people living the empty hopeless life. It just happens to be set in the new US suburbia, but it could have been anywhere.

Frank and April got married young. April’s parents never wanted her and Frank’s parents had him when they were older and evidently he was a mistake. Frank’s father worked in an aimless job (I kept thinking of Spacely Sprockets and Cogswell's Cogs from the Jetsons) and after April finds out she’s pregnant Frank takes a job in this same corporation where he watched his father suffer, in the “pre-sales” office. Frank is not even sure what he does. He has an elaborate system of shuffling piles from one stack to another and forwarding memos to keep from doing the actual work. 
The book is full of unhappy marriages, unwanted children, unhappy childhoods, bad parents, dead-end jobs, and cracker-box (but clean) houses. It’s a story of how people can get caught up in marching through life, checking off the big bullet points whether they want the items listed beside the bullet points or not, and numbing themselves just to get through each day.

Some thoughts while reading the book:

I haven’t seen the movie, and don’t really recall seeing the preview, although my husband says I have. But I pictured Leonardo DiCaprio with every mention of Frank. Of course his picture is on the front of the copy of the book I read – but so is Kate Winslet’s and I never saw her in my movie in my head (in fact when I did see someone playing April’s part it was Cybill Shepherd).

Is it always the parent’s fault? I’m going to scream now.

Great book and should be added to your must read list.

Sempre in attesa a Revolutionary Hill

Mi rendo conto che non scrivo da un po’. Oggi ho pensato di farlo, dato che ho letto un libro particolarmente bello e sento la necessità di parlarne; ma il pensiero che è da un po’ che non mi siedo e rifletto sulle parole da buttare giù, mi mette a disagio. Ci provo, però.

Questa estate ho iniziato a leggere Revolutionary Road, il romanzo più famoso del grande romanziere americano — Richard Yates . Di norma, però, durante il periodo estivo è raro che io riesca a leggere con costanza e soprattutto con attenzione; infatti, pochi giorni dopo averlo cominciato, l’ho abbandonato senza neanche sentirmi turbata — come invece accade abitualmente non appena lascio a metà un libro. Solo a settembre ho pensato di riprenderlo in mano, un po’ perché ero curiosa di conoscere a fondo la storia e un po’ perché mi sentivo in dovere di leggerlo definitivamente. In fondo, il legame che c’è tra me e Yates è pateticamente importante: a lui ho fregato il cognome per usarlo come titolo del blog — come potrei, quindi, voltargli le spalle rifiutandomi di leggere il suo libro, tra l’altro quello più importante?

Revolutionary Road è stato pubblicato nel 1961 negli Stati Uniti riscuotendo grande successo fin da subito. La trama è molto semplice: siamo nel 1955, nel Connecticut, più precisamente nella zona residenziale di Revolutionary Hill, dove avviene la maggior parte delle faccende narrate nel libro; i protagonisti sono Frank e April Wheeler, una giovane coppia di coniugi piuttosto eccentrici e turbati, la cui vita, assieme a quella dei loro due figli, viene sconvolta da un climax di eventi destabilizzanti. Superficialmente l’esistenza dei Wheeler appare arricchita da fatti positivi e decisamente normali: la compagnia teatrale, i divertimenti nei fine settimana, le serate passate in compagnia dei vicini, la vita domestica placida, la routine del lavoro, l’alcol, i figli e i relativi impegni, la fatica di mantenere integra e apparentemente felice la famiglia, i litigi e le immediate riappacificazioni. Ma se il lettore prosegue e scava a fondo scopre che la verità è un’altra: i Wheeler sono continuamente afflitti da sciagure e calamità che a tratti sembrano demolire una volta per sempre l’unità della famiglia; borghesi fino al midollo, April e Frank non fanno altro che lamentarsi di quanto la società sia deplorevole, e lo fanno sia tra le mura casalinghe che tra quelle degli amici e vicini di casa, i Campbell, di cui prima si fidano poi li allontanano da sé perché più di tutti incarnano gli stereotipi che i Wheeler detestano e temono. I bambini, invece, sono un impegno sorprendentemente importante e a volte sono troppo irritanti; a Frank il lavoro non piace, lo ritiene inutile e stupido ma non ha il coraggio di cercarne uno migliore, mentre April non ha molto da fare se non compiere il dovere di madre, moglie e donna di casa. Ma proprio quando le cose non sembrano più gestibili e riparabili, proprio a lei viene in mente un’idea un po’ romantica, un po’ affrettata e — secondo me — un po’ falsa: vendere la casa e trasferirsi in Europa, dove con Europa intende dire Parigi. In pratica è una soluzione per cercare di mettere in silenzio il malessere che ha infettato i due giovani. April cerca di persuadere Frank condendo l’idea con progetti allettanti: a Parigi, infatti, Frank non dovrà lavorare perché ci penserà April, lui dovrà solo dedicarsi a trovare se stesso, a capire che cosa vuole combinare nella vita, a cercare ispirazione per manifestare la sua vera natura. Il futuro verrà da sé — in certo senso è proprio questo che April sta cercando di dire. Andiamocene e si vedrà. Frank, che solo apparentemente è convinto, nell’attesa di partire si lascia plagiare dal canto seducente di una giovane collega: Maureen Grube; gli viene anche offerta una promozione consistente nello scrivere discorsi motivazionali per i venditori dell’azienda. Quel che succede successivamente, lo lascio scoprire a chi ancora non ha letto il libro.

Viene facile pensare che Revolutionary Road sia una sorta di accusa nei confronti dei sempliciotti, di quelle anime speranzose che vedono nella fuga dalla città e dagli impegni un possibile equilibrio. O forse no. Forse Revolutionary Road è solo una storia di persone allo sbando e suddite di una società opaca, noiosa e letale. Persone così ignoranti da apparire ingenue, soggetti inetti che non hanno alcun controllo della loro volontà, che sanno di dover cambiare per poter guarire dal malessere che li tormenta ma che, nei fatti, non cambiano mai. Ecco chi sono i Wheeler: le classiche persone che sembrano essere in cerca di qualcosa di autentico e moralmente giusto, ma che in realtà stanno solo escogitando una soluzione più facile e meno seria, che non prevede troppe responsabilità, dando per scontato che la fortuna sia sempre dalla loro parte. Insomma, pensare che basterà arrivare a Parigi per potersi sentire bene significa cercare un’alternativa veloce e scevra di responsabilità, e il sollievo effettivamente è effimero — perché una volta arrivati a Parigi, eventualmente, i problemi incomberanno e lo faranno con più importanza che a casa dove le cose, volendolo, possono essere riparate fin da subito senza dover necessariamente mostrare il passaporto. 

I personaggi di Revolutionary Road non si conoscono realmente, per questo April propone la fuga, ovvero un cambiamento rivoluzionario che mette i bambini in una situazione di disagio e il matrimonio a rischio. Tuttavia Frank non è da meno, dato che non fa altro che screditare il suo lavoro e i vicini di casa, che ai suoi occhi sono sempre più lontani e fasulli. I due Wheeler cercano una libertà che, nel luogo in cui vivono, sembra impossibile perché contrastata da forze sociali e abitudini radicate, ma fondamentalmente non riescono a ottenerla perché figli delle convenzioni, delle tradizioni e del culto del denaro da cui non si staccano perché loro non vogliono farlo. Non ne hanno le forze. Tutti i personaggi, in realtà, sembrano essere come i Wheeler: illusi, insipidi, inetti, inabili a seguire il buono e il giusto e soprattutto incapaci di rimanere uniti per il bene della famiglia o, più generalmente, per aiutare e consolare gli amici e i vicini ogni volta che sono afflitti da problemi e timori. Nell’universo di Yates sembra quasi che per i personaggi essere imperfetti sia una vergogna pesante e inaccettabile. Decisamente. 

Il dilemma, però, è: cambiare o subire? E qual è l’opzione più facile? Alla fine è solo questione di sapere cos’è più semplice, più veloce, meno difficile, meno complicato. Le coscienze addormentate di April e Frank sono il nucleo della storia: senza di esse, non esisterebbe alcun Revolutionary Road. E al di là di tutto quello che non ho detto, perché parlare intelligentemente e minuziosamente di un libro tanto importante per me è impossibile, rimane che la vita dei Wheeler, di April in particolare, consiste nel non fare la cosa più giusta, più evidente e più adeguata, per cercare una soluzione più drastica, più teatrale, capace di dare sollievo immediatamente ma che purtroppo e inevitabilmente lascia molti interrogativi, forse troppi, e che alla fine porta a un vicolo cieco. 

Assurdo. Assurdo e comico. Decisamente fuori luogo — sì, Revolutionary Road è anche questo. Un matrimonio impossibile, finto, nato da opportunità remote e da esigenze giovanili che ora non hanno più importanza; i figli, come argilla da modellare, obbligati a partire anche quando non lo desiderano affatto e quindi anche loro, ineluttabilmente, vittime del malessere genitoriale; e Parigi, che si staglia all’orizzonte, è una promessa in attesa ed è schifosamente lontana. È inarrivabile. È decisamente fuori luogo. Pessima idea, April.

La vita dovrebbe realmente corrispondere a quello che vogliamo? Non ha forse più importanza che quello che facciamo e diciamo corrisponda a quello che vogliamo effettivamente fare e dire? Ma forse quest’ultima rimane l’opzione più difficile, perché implica una minima conoscenza di sé, il controllo della propria volontà e il possesso di una coscienza sveglia e, soprattutto, implica la coraggiosa intenzione di dare seria importanza a quanto si fa e si dice. 

Restano poche cose da dire, tipo che Richard Yates è magistrale: in questo romanzo riesce a metterci a una distanza tale che riusciamo a captare i dettagli della vita dei Wheeler e degli altri personaggi, e quindi a riconoscere gli elementi che mettono in relazione la nostra esistenza con la loro; ma al tempo stesso ci pone abbastanza lontano da poter rimanere lucidi e ricordare che quella, per fortuna, non è la nostra vita. Bisogna dire, quindi, che Richard ha sfruttato la catarsi aristotelica con acuta intelligenza. 

E bisogna anche dire un po’ a tutti di leggere Revolutionary Road. Bisogna. Perché una volta finito ti senti addosso uno sguardo, che è quello di Yates, che ti esamina attentamente e ti sta addosso, come a volerti ricordare che tu non devi fare come i Wheeler ma devi stare attento, devi tenere sveglia la coscienza e attiva la volontà, e soprattutto non devi scappare se vuoi cambiare, ma semplicemente devi cambiare. E devi vivere la vita come se questa avesse davvero importanza. Altrimenti quello che ti si para davanti è solo il nulla. 

Vita significativa o nullità permanente? Cos’è più facile? E soprattutto cos’è meglio?

“You're painfully alive in a drugged and dying culture.” 

This novel made me question every decision I have made and every decision I am yet to make. I don't think I have ever connected with a character as much as I have with April Wheeler and I don't suppose I ever will. To put it simply, the novel is a masterpiece of truth.

I knew nothing of Revolutionary Road (or Richard Yates for that matter) until I watched the movie by Sam Mendes in 2009 based on this novel. I really enjoyed it and decided to read the book. This daily life prose ain't exactly the kind of text I am used to reading, but knowing the messages it carried made me try it nonetheless. 
The book follows Frank and April Wheeler, from their youth, to their marriage and life together, mostly from Frank's point of view up until the end, when it shifts to April's for a while before ending with their friends telling the rest of the story. Yates does a marvellous work describing situations, thoughts and opinions and the main characters are so credible you feel it might be your neighbours he's talking about. I felt I understood them, theirs feelings, their plans, their lies to themselves, their disappointments, their angers. John Givings, a man suffering from some mental disorder, is an exceptionally well built and well placed character as his distance or differences from the regular people allow him to state what other might only think, creating unique situations that make their point and transmit their message as no others.
Although it was a very interesting read and not at all disappointing, I did feel some boredom halfway through the book, as if I was reading the story in slow-motion. This may of course be as much a result of the way it is written as of the fact that I knew what would happen after having seen the movie.
With Revolutionary Road, Yates shows the society seemly from a naive point of view, with the dreams of those who don't want to be just someone else, who don't want to follow other people's plans, to have other people's boring lives. He demonstrates how those resigned persons can find themselves becoming the conforming people they criticized, as if the needs of life in this society led them to that without notice. But he also tells of other ones, of those who still need life to be different, those who just can't get used to the paradigmatic middle-class life of the modern society.
I recommend this book both to people who would read it as a regular romance and to those who like to read about the relationship between the individuals and between them and the society, its standards and ideals. I'd rate it around 4-5 on the character creation but 3 on the story development. Because Goodreads does not allow for half stars (would be a 3,5) I gave it 3 by comparison with my other classifications.

The shortest way for me to describe this book is that it's the spiritual predecessor to We Need to Talk About Kevin. Where that book asks, "Why do we even have children?" this one asks, "Why do we ever abandon our dreams of glamorous, cultured inner-city lifestyles, move to the suburbs and then have children?" Of course part of the answer for this book is that abortions are more condemned and harder to access in 1950s America than they are today, but still, you know.

So this is the story of April and Frank Wheeler, who were happily sharing a cultured if impoverished life in New York City when, against all their plans, April fell pregnant. She wanted to abort it, but Frank didn't – not because he actually wanted a child, mind you, but because he felt it was an affront to his masculinity for a woman to not want to bear his child. So they move to the suburbs into a dull, mind-numbing existence – she as a housewife, he with an unimaginably boring office job in the city – and years later, with their marriage dysfunctional as hell, they decide to move to Paris, as they'd dreamed so long ago.

The plot as it unfolds from there is not exactly unpredictable, but it's compelling and tragic (an easier read than We Need to Talk About Kevin). It's a condemnation of the nuclear family, of the way the pursuit of this ideal demands conformity and abandonment of one's dreams. Of course it takes the madman, John Givings, to voice all of this and point out to people what they're doing, even as his mother tries to shut him up – not particularly subtle, this book, but great all the same.

With Revolutionary Road, I violated my #1 rule...I watched the movie before I read the book. After the movie ended, I immediately ran and got the book with the hopes that I could delve deeper into issues that were pertinent in my life. I, too, am in a constant skirmish involving my free spirit on the one side and a sedate suburban life on the other. 

What I found is that the people who were involved in making this movie stayed very true to Richard Yates' vision...and, Kate Winslet & Leonardo Dicaprio did as well by perfectly capturing the main characters, April & Frank Wheeler. Even though there wasn't significant more material in the book, I am so glad I read it. I love Yates' writing style and I connected even deeper with the theme being able to read and ponder, read on and ponder some more. This is a dark story and not for everyone, but I absolutely loved it and look forward to reading more of Yates' fabulous writing.
