This was a fascinating account of the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone park. I love Rick McIntyre’s ability to remain objective about his findings while also weaving a narrative out of the thousands of wolf sightings he recorded. Some parts dragged a little bit, and since I read The Reign of Wolf 21 first (which is the sequel to this book), I already knew most of how this book was going to shake out, but I didn’t mind because I got to understand it in more detail. 

My husky mix, Thunder, passed away this year after living with us since he was a puppy. This book made me think of him so many times and confirmed the emotional depths that I always knew he had. If you want to understand your dog better, or if you just love reading about the natural world, I highly recommend this series. It also gave me a little nostalgia for the warrior cats books I read as a kid, just because of the level of drama these wolves had with each other.
