Not bad. But I didn't like the story line very much. It's not much of a 'mystery', in my opinion.

So apparently, I only read the book last year cause I actually thought it was 2 or 3 years ago. I'm currently re-reading it so that I can go on with the Tracy Crosswhie series. Well, well. This one's a definitely forgettable book if I find the need to re-read it. Damn. I can't even remember what happened and I am usually pretty good with remembering stuff.

That sucks.

Oh. My. God. What a journey!

I normally don't read mysteries and police stories like this but I am trying to branch out. I was immediately intrigued by the beautiful cover and the interesting title. I mean what could go wrong? Absolutely nothing! I was not even remotely disappointed. 

So this book follows the story of Tracy Crosswhite. Her sister was abducted and Tracy becomes a homicide detective because of this. She wants to find out what happened to her sister. I applaud Tracy. She is so strong. Not knowing what happened to your beloved baby sister for 20 years has to be one of the hardest things anybody could go through. 

Like in the blurb, Tracy doesn't think Edmund House killed her sister, once they find her remains. She conducts her own little investigation which pissed off everybody in her small town and enlists the help of her childhood friend, Dan, to help her. She finds out a lot more than what she bargained for and almost pays for it with her life. 

I loved this mystery. I'm normally really bad at figuring things out but I was so certain with this one. I was like  oh yeah, I got this. I know what's up.  only to figure out that was not the case and I was wrong about 99% of the time. The plot had so many twists and turns but it wasn't overbearing. It kept you guessing up until the last page. It gave you time to let the new information sink in before it threw some more at you. I like books like that. Basically all my notes are how much I loved this mystery and the plot twists and I used a lot of exclamation marks so I was pretty excited to say the least. 

The characters were incredibly developed as well. I thought Tracy was written beautifully. She was hardened by the loss but still showed emotion. She was relatable. I wasn't irritated by her. I could feel her loss and how she tried to deal with it. Even working in a pretty sexist environment, she kept her cool. I liked Dan as well. He is a good fit for Tracy. Even the secondary characters were written well. They did not overpower the story but contributed in a way that helped the story go smoothly. My one critique (which is small) is that there is a lot of secondary characters. A bit difficult to keep track of all of them at times but it's not that big of an issue. 

I'm going to stop this review now before I start to babble on about how great the plot was and give a bunch of things away. But let's just say that this was just an all around great book to introduce me to mysteries. I have other books I am making myself read before I download the next book. It's free on Kindle Unlimited so I suggest you all get it! You will not be disappointed.

Good plot however there were too many characters introduced.

This book is a perfect read if you love crime stories/courtroom dramas! I am a huge lover of crime books so I really liked this! It’s also a perfect book for the spooky season!

We followed a few different points of view through different timelines in this book which at first I wasn’t to sure I was going to like, however, as I progressed in the story I actually really enjoyed that aspect of this book. I also really liked the pacing and the way the plot and story progressed!

Overall, I really enjoyed my time reading My Sisters Grave, and I will definitely be reading the second book in this duoligy!!

I didn’t realize this is part of a series, as it’s fantastic as a stand alone book! Honestly if someone who had already read the series had not told me that there were more books with the main character, Tracy, I would not have known. This book was written and gut wrenching at times. I do wish there had been defining chapter titles or something that reflected when she was in the present versus in the past (dates or something along those lines). As someone with a sibling who has passed, the writer truly captures the pain and what ifs that you’re left with. The ending surprised me. I’m looking forward to reading more of this series as I did enjoy the characters.

I'm not sure how this book ended up in my kindle library but I'm glad it did. I had a hard time getting into it at first (mostly because I hadn't picked the book out and I wasn't sure it would be something I'd enjoy) but eventually I just couldn't put it down. I NEEDED to know what happened to Sarah. A really great book

I love when a book comes out of nowhere and surprises me by being an enjoyable read. I do feel wrong calling a mystery about a woman's murdered sister an enjoyable read but it was. I was hooked from the beginning and was dying to unravel the mystery of whodunit. Turns out I would never have guessed but that's what makes it so fun!

I got this book years ago as a Kindle Forst read and this freebie sat unread ever since. I actually began reading the first chapter thinking I'd DNF within a few minutes.

I was wrong.

What I should have learnt by now is that I am often wrong and should never trust my instincts on a book. But I might learn. One day. I'm glad I gave this book ashot though


Tracey has never let the disappearance of her sister go. She knows she is probably dead but as the body has never been found and the trial to convict a man of the her murder never sat right with her when the evidence was so circumstantial. When she gets the call to say a body has been found she knows that is her sister and she knows she can finally get the closure she needs by proving who actually did it.

Yes, this book probably does follow the usual plot of other mysteries. The MC is a woman on a mission. You know she'll be the one seeing the truth and older folks will be out to stop her. And there's a minor and cute romance. But I didn't care.

I admit the big reveal at the end threw me a little. It was unexpected (at least to me) but I didn't totally believe it and did kind of with there was a different answer to it all. But the reveal was believable and I was surprised and I think that's kind of thest important thing with a mystery. I want to know who did it in the end. I don't want to have figured it out halfway through cos it's just not as fun. You don't get the same kind tension to figure it all out then.

I enjoyed it and was so pleasntly surprised. I can only hope I can stumble across more winners like this as I clear up my kindle shelves. I'll definitely continue the series.

My favorite kind of thriller is the crime/police procedural. While I think there's something so fascinating about police work, I don't have any real desire to go into the detective field or CSI or any of that myself. I just like to read about them. I think the main reason why those kinds of books appeal to me more than the typical mystery-thriller is that they're more believable. I can't stand books where the main character has no background in crime investigation yet somehow she solves the entire mystery, while the bumbling police don't believe anything she says. In real life, those same MCs would probably FUBAR the investigation. All of this is because when I picked up this novel, I thought it would hit me right in my happy place.

Interestly, this book and I did not get off on the right foot. Tracy, our main character, started out okay and was very convincingly female to the point where I had to keep reminding myself that the author was, in fact, a man (for some reason, I find male authors write female protagonists much more convincingly than female authors write male protagonists. Maybe it's because they don't think as deeply into it as female writers seem to do), but as the book progressed she started to quickly annoy me. Her constant quest to free Edmund House confused me, because, why? Even if he didn't kill her sister, he's still a horrible, horrible human being who did other things to deserve that life sentence, like rape and torture a girl for three days, and it seemed to me like Tracy would have been the kind of person to be comfortable letting him rot in prison. 

Though I just want to say that it's pretty cool to have a main character involved in shooting competitions and not treating owning a few guns or liking hunting as an automatic sign of someone being a murderer, as well as having a setting that's rural, but not portrayed as being a town full of backwoods inbred rednecks. I found the woodsy rural setting to be a refreshing take on conventions of the genre and this book to be a much more convincing take on the genre of rural noir than other books- unlike A Good Idea.

I also didn't like Dan O'Leary much at all. Oddly enough, he was another reason I had to keep reminding myself this book was written by a guy- he seemed for all the world like some dream love interest a girl would create. Educated, wealthy, hurt by his cheating ex wife, childhood best friend, the typical perfect love interest. traits. Not into that stuff, myself. Also, their relationship struck me as manipulative and even inappropriate, especially on Tracy's part. I couldn't shake the idea she was using him for his occupation, and he had only taken the case just because it would get her in his bed, not because it was a "gross miscarriage of justice". I think my least favorite part was during the trial, when he put her on the stand, and the fact they had just slept together the night before made me think the whole thing was just wildly inappropriate. Could just be me, though, and YMMV (wow, look at me using all these acronyms, damn I'm cool).

So I really did not like the first half of the book, including the trial. I think my absolute least favorite part in the world was the outcome of a trial, in which I was like "okay, we're supposed to root for a chick who put a convicted rapist and torturer back on the streets, and basically destroyed the careers of so many close friends of her father just to open up an investigation that might never get solved. Sounds logical.". 

But then the second half of the book got really good all of a sudden and was the reason the book got as high a score it did. I find that I'm an ending person. I will, 9 times out of 10 (actually more like 7 times or 8 times) give a book a higher score if the second half is better than the first than I would give a book whose first half is better than its second half. Probably because that's the half that sticks with me the most.
