I expected another story about the Romanovs' final days in this book. What I found pleasantly surprised me. Instead of telling the story about the final living days of the Romanovs, this book told the story about the discovery of their bones and unfolding of the true story of what actually happened to them on the day, and afterwards, of their execution. 
I found myself utterly fascinated by this account and would have rated the book five stars had Massie not stuck on a rather odd and incongruent final chapter which went back to the final moments of the Romanov's lives, telling the story that he had repeated ad nauseam throughout the book already.

So very fascinating. 

I have had a fascination with the Romanovs since the first time I watched the FOX animated movie Anastasia (which is still one of my favorite movies today, at the age of 22). Over the years, I have researched a bit here and there about the Romanov family and Russian history, but I never sat down and really read about it. After rewatching Anastasia (yet again) recently, that yearning to learn more hit me once again. So I picked this up and simply devoured it.
