Eventually we are prepared, usually reluctantly, to die - for country, for family, for honour, for shame, for freedom. How do we make those decisions? What makes us more and less reluctant? How do we understand people who embrace death? What do these attitudes say about our societies, our self-image and the changing nature of our beliefs?
