I originally read this book during my senior year of high school, and it left such a lasting impression that I recently decided to read it again.

Typically, I’m not a huge fan of religious or overly preachy books—but this one is different.

I wanted it to be more about Denver and his evolution more than about the white Christians who 'saved' him. Too much focus on religion and not enough on this issues that led to homelessness.

This was a really touching story about the friendship and love that develops between two wealthy, white Christians and a homeless, agnostic black man. 

Despite the many differences between them, Ron and Debbie Hall befriend Denver after they start volunteering at a mission. One would think that the Halls would have the most to contribute to the relationship. After all, Denver is an illiterate ex-convict who once spent time in one of America's toughest prisons. However, as the story unfolds, it's clear that Denver brings as much, if not more, to the friendship than the Halls. Along the way, Denver comes to know God and becomes something of a missionary himself. Ultimately, he is instrumental in helping the Hall family through an awful ordeal. The power of God to work in and through people comes through loud and clear in this story.

For anyone who has ever dismissed a homeless person as someone disposable or without value, this book might make them see things differently. Certainly, it should be enough to make one take a second look at those who appear to have the least and those who appear to have the most. This book shows that outward appearances aren't always accurate.
