Man, that was outstanding. I loved it. I don't think there was anything physically wrong with it. In literary terms, it was perfect. The fact that there was/wasn't a plot was already perfect. I loved the idea of using islam to so deeply connect the reader and the character; as a muslim reading this book, to be able to not distinguish characteristics and behaviours between themselves and the main character is such a precious feeling, and I find it's quite difficult to fully form. 

I found, however, that the length of this book wasn't capable of building an emotional bond with the character, which I cherish. The 200 pages or so were incapable of that bond, and I wish if it had just a little more content, just a little more, it would have been sufficient enough for that. I'd love to see more behind Jamilla's story, rather than just present day, but flashes to her childhood and stuff. I think it would really make this story pop.

But it is nevertheless a beautiful book to show the life of a post-taliban life, where Islam in an Islamic country has become weakened as a result of the extremism of the Taliban. It's extremely insightful, and it gives a very good representation of a modern day muslimah. I don't think you would need any islamic knowledge yourself to understand this book.
