abandoned this at 31%. cannot do it. matt's obviously the main character you're supposed to hate, but this is just on a different level for me. he doesn't shut up! he's constantly whining about how there's no god, how religious people are stupid, how he's always angry, and how he loves to cheat on his girlfriend. this book gave me the biggest ick imaginable and it got hard to keep having to read about his revolting character.

i've loved ellen hopkins's writing style and her books for a while, but this has to be her worst and i'm very disappointed that this failed for me.

           A very powerful book about grief, family and faith. I struggled with Matt's family and his girlfriend. Even in the end, I found his father such a repulsive person that I was not rooting for Matt to forgive. What kind of person--much less a parent--allows the bullies who drove his child to suicide to not only continue to play, but be his favorite players on the team? I find it extremely disturbing that every adult in the town appears okay with the bullying that led to Luke's suicide. Nothing happened? That is the only part of the book that fell flat with me. I just can't find it realistic that there were no consequences for the extreme bullying that took place. 

My heart broke for Matt and his struggle with grief. Hopkins' books always leave me in awe of her writing and grasp on emotions. The ability to convey so many different emotions is truly a gift and I always walk away thinking differently about the topic she tackles. Matt's letter to the school board was beautiful and every librarian and teacher should at least read that portion of the book.

I wish I could rate this book except for the last few pages. I'm in shock about how it ended... not at all expected, and not a great twist. That being said.... this is a very intelligent and interesting read. The prose format is so unique and helps both lighten deepen and the heavy subjects Hopkins tackles. I definitely recommend this book... but not for the faint of heart or super religious person.

This book....

I don't know Ellen. I'm one of your biggest fans but this one? I cannot pinpoint what exactly I disliked.

The characters were well developed.
The story makes complete sense.
The topics were perfect and I've always admired you for writing about topics that other authors tend to avoid.

But there was something missing and at one point I was forcing myself to read this. And I don't do that with your books Ellen. Not at all. It actually saddens me.

Rumble didn't have that free verse that makes Ellen, ELLEN. I didn't read random sentences in one line going down or read a verse shaped in an R.

But that's not the point at all. I wanted to love this book but I couldn't. I'm mad and disappointed and sad all at the same time.

I expected more and in my opinion, I didn't feel like it was delivered.
