As I'm reading and watching the series simultaneously, I have to say I prefer the anime's restrained approached when it comes to the on-going atrocities of the ruling class. The violence perpetuated on the Baskerville estate is so twisted that the art is fetishizes the villains. I prefer the timing of the anime where the focus is moving to the government itself where Mycroft and Albert are working. I'm curious to see the fallout when William and Sherlock come to this realization or are forced to acknowledge it.

** spoiler alert **
           I much prefer these spy plots to the revenge killing plots. It's interesting to see how well the two mystery series blend together. The Bond plots help to give the manga a well needed focus. Left to its own devices, this series can quickly devolve into a fetishization of violence.

Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 1

Moriarty the Patriot, Volume 1 by Ryōsuke Takeuchi and Hikaru Miyoshi is the start of a manga that has been adapted into a fantastic anime. Moriarty in the original canon is my least favorite of Holmes's adversary but he's a key part of the series and a favorite villain in adaptations, especially in various television series. This version of Moriarty, though, is by far the best version I've seen (followed in second place by Elementary's).

Moriarty the Patriot, Volume 2 by Ryōsuke Takeuchi and Hikaru Miyoshi (Illustrations) contains the Noahtic arc which introduces the brothers Moriarty to their future rival, Sherlock Holmes. From there it does a rather straight up re-imagining of A Study in Scarlet (1887).

Noatic arc is unique to the manga/anime. The canon introduction of Moriarty is frankly underwhelming. Most of his brilliance and nefarious motivations are informed attributes. His main goal was to kill off Sherlock Holmes so Arthur Conan Doyle could go off and write other projects — and you know how well that worked out!

A satisfying reimagining of a character as old as Moriarty. One trend I am quite comfortable with of late is liking the anti-hero. In this case the Moriarty definitely sees himself as doing something necessary in a world that is operating in ways it should not. Very much recommend if you at all cheer for the more complicated character or just want something a bit different.
