With a political psychology perspective, Decalo, an authority on French-speaking Africa, surveys the recent social, economic, and political histories of Uganda, Central African Republic, and Equatorial Guinea, exploring the rise of Idi Amin, Jean-Bedel Bokassa, and Francisco Macias Nguema. Although other brutal leaders have appeared on the continent since publication of the first edition, the author chose not to expand coverage of case studies but rather to look deeper at the consequences of dictatorship in the three countries of original study.
