I wanted to like this book. I really did. Feyre is a seemingly strong, Katniss character. She hunts, feeds her family, does business at the market. Yet, she only does this because she is bound to a promise by her dead mother. Her sisters are ungrateful and useless, her father is damaged/incapable of running the household. Feyre does everything. One of her sisters is too stuck-up to help out, and the other is too childish. Feyre does nothing to correct them. Fine, I get it- she still loves them even if they're lowkey abusive. After a series of events, she's whisked away to the home of a High Fae, which she's supposed to be grateful for because it was either that or death. Initially, she wants to go back but she soon realizes that the only place she is safe is with Tamlin, the handsome faerie cursed with a masked face. Naturally, their attraction for each other grows. Feyre keeps doing risky things, like sneaking out during a faerie festival and going out into the woods, where all sorts of monsters lurk. At this point I could hardly stand Feyre. She just wanted attention. Where was my tough, strong huntress? She was replaced by a weak romantic who couldn't resist the pull of the beat of the drums, of the faerie illusions, etc. I'll admit, I'm picky about the books I read. If a character does something I remotely don't like, it's over. Maybe I'm having a bad day and the character is too happy-go-lucky. Maybe I stopped believing in love a long time ago and I can't stand it when the character says [spoilers removed]. Because that's what happened. And I stopped reading after that. Feyre. I expected so much of you. And I get that you're sexually frustrated and feel trapped and just want someone to love you, but PLEASE. DO something instead of letting the faeries pull you this way and that. EDIT: 2023 I started reading this book again before trying the Thorn of Glass series this year and found the main character so annoying... then I looked it up and realized I had written a review 7 years prior with equal annoyance. Not reading Sarah J. Maas ever again...

A Court of Thorns and Roses was one of those books where I totally get why it has a massive fandom… but it didn’t fully hit for me. The setup is strong: moody fantasy world, a heroine thrown into a new (and dangerous) realm, and that classic “everything is bigger than you think” vibe. Sarah J. Maas is good at atmosphere, you can feel the lushness of the setting, the tension of the rules, the sense that something darker is sitting under the surface waiting to snap. But compared to the Powerless trilogy, it felt… tamer? Less punchy. Less addictive. With Lauren Roberts, the banter and pace had me feral, like I was living in the book and talking about it for weeks. With ACOTAR, I was interested, but not obsessed. The romance didn’t crackle for me in the same way, and parts of the story felt like they were taking their time when I wanted them to grip me by the shirt and drag me forward. That said, it does have its moments. When it leans into the intrigue and the higher stakes, it gets genuinely compelling. You can see the foundations being laid for a bigger series, and I can imagine how this would be a perfect gateway into fantasy romance for a lot of readers. One more honest note: I’m also not a fan of the author’s public political stance, and that influenced my decision not to continue the rest of the series. No drama, just a personal boundary around where I put my time and money. So overall: enjoyable in parts, clearly influential in the genre, but not on the same level as Powerless for me. If you love slower-build fantasy romance with rich world vibes, you’ll probably have a great time. If you want sharp banter, relentless pacing, and that “I will cancel plans for this book” energy, this one might feel a bit mild. Rating: 3/5 (respectfully, and with a few highlights bookmarked).

As a reread, still love it!! Thought I wouldn’t enjoy my second read through but turns out I’ve enjoyed it even more!!

I was searching an easy, light read after “I who have never known men”. This is the blueprint, most generic self-insert fantasy ever. I almost DNF-ed when the main character was revealed to be the chosen one who would literally break a magic curse if she had told the male lead “I love you”. Of course, only Feyre can save this immensely powerful High Lord. I didn’t find their romance very compelling, to the point where Feyre would break every bone in her body for Tamlin. I’m sure Tamlin is hot but every character just felt very flat. Alis as the deux ex machina lore dropper, Lucien as the sarcastic witty bodyguard bestie and Rhys as your dangerous baddie. I see why people like this series but I need better fantasy recommendations.

Extremely good world building. I like how Feyre went from being a cool hunter to a dumbass to being cool again. I like the characters there is a good range of good and evil and all the characters are thought through and have good stories. There were some good plot twists although the ending was a little bit too obvious for me.

Wow! I had heard of this book ages ago, and when I got it, I couldn’t wait to read it, yet it was on my shelf for two or more whole years - it did not disappoint! I loved the world building and the fantasy aspects of the book! The story was also very well written - from a lot of suspense about the secrets of this new world, to twists and turns and to the reveals near the end. I’m hoping to hear more about some of the things from future parts, as I felt there are a few things we don’t know yet!

This is a truly fantastic fantasy novel, that builds slowly with fantastic world-building. While the initial set-up may seem slow for some, the payoff is absolutely worth it. I think people have the wrong idea that this is just a smut book, and they expect a vapid book with a lot of “action.” But this is incredible storytelling and a fantastic read. The last 150 pages or so are absolutely thrilling. Highly recommend!!!

I loved how the characters made sense. Feyre’s decisions and view of the world was consistent with her upbringing and all the characters just made sense which isn’t always the case in every book. I loved how the book has shifted half way and took a dark turn. I felt like I was reading two different books but it was connected in a wholesome way. I loved Tamlin as he gave me green flags. He wasn’t ordering Feyre or making her do anything. He was respectful of her space and decisions. I don’t know why none of the fan art is about Tamlin and Feyre and focuses more on Ryhs, but can’t wait to find out more!

This Series has been on my Shelf and TBR Pile for a couple of years and I have been daunted to pick this one up as I know so many friends that have loved and enjoyed this one and I didn’t want to be the odd one out in a group of people so have just left it on the shelf until now when I decided that I finally felt ready to dive in and pick this up for the first time. I know that I’m 10 years late but here I am, and I can tell that if book 1 is anything to go by that I think I’m going to enjoy this series! 

This is Beauty and the Beast retelling. Feyre struggled to provide for her family who didn't seem to appreciate her efforts, until she killed a wolf who turned out not be a wolf but a fae and this kill cascaded a series of events. She was forced to live in the Spring Court under the protection of Tamlin, whose handsome face was half-covered by a mask, the result of a curse cast by a ruthless enemy. While a spreading blight threatens the Fairie Realms and the Mortal Lands and nightmarish creatures lurk in the darkness, Feyre must find out her place in an ancient power puzzle without damning her soul in the process.

Feyre, the ultimate heroine, a courageous, strong, and self-sufficient girl who is independent and clever beyond her years. Then we have Tamlin, part beast but looks like a man from the outside until riled and then the hands transform to claws and his ruthless side is exposed. I loved that Sarah Maas did not sacrifice a strong male character by creating a brilliant female one, because both characters are multi layered, complex and fascinating and they both draw you into the story! 

Sarah knew how to keep you on the edge until all you could do was gasp for breath and pray the Lord she would be merciful!

Very good book. Mostly build up and world design, with the ending being the best part for sure. Don’t get caught up in the slow start, push through and enjoy the ending and the beginning to a fun series!
