Shift

While Wool has a pretty juvenile third act, Shift's whole overarching idea is pretty immature. There's a chance it's all intentional; I suppose all sorts of threads could mature in Dust. But I doubt it and Howey can't keep things interesting in the meantime and couldn't worldbuild his way out of a wet paper bag.

A good read. Interesting to see how it all started and a little of what’s to potentially come. I just found it dragged on a little bit too much. I found myself just wanting to get through some of the solo chapters. 

But, still a really enjoyable book. Looking to dive into the final book and see how it all ends.

This man can not write female characters to save his life, but damn is good at claustrophobic, apocalyptic tension-building.

The tagline on the cover of this book says "Some secrets should remain buried", and I have to totally agree with that. This book is 99% a prequel to Wool, and IMHO completely unnecessary. It explains how the world came to be what it is, how the silos were created, and why things happened the way they happened. But why would I want to know this? Not knowing every detail of these things is what made this world so interesting for me in the first place. 

It also doesn't help that the main character is called Donald of all names... and does some incredibly stupid things, especially at the end of the book. It's absolutely unfathomable to me why he did what he did to Anna. Why?? WTF? Also, reading about Jimmy's solitude became really boring really fast. 

Not to mention the frustration of just wanting to know how Juliette's story continues and not getting that satisfaction.

Altogether, a very mediocre sequel to an okay first book. I hope the final book is better.

Tore through this. Adds so much ‘traditional’ sci-fi onto the first book. Cannot wait for the third

I should have learned from my mistake with the first of this trilogy. I kept going with it even though I wasn't enjoying it at all. I bought the second during a recent kindle spree, convincing myself that I really want to know what the silos are all about. It turns out that I do - I really do - but I just don't want to have to read any more of the books to find out. The clincher with Shift was when I discovered that I'd taken nothing in at all, or remembered anyone at all, in the last 50 pages I'd read. That's never a good sign. For a novel/ set of novels that is about challenging nefarious powers and reasserting individual freedoms and rights, the characters are bizarrely indistinguishable from one another. Shame, really, for it's a tale that's right up my street.

Wool was such a well-written, addictive read that I didn't know what to expect from Shift and was a bit scared it would be a disappointing follow-up. With Hugh Howey involved, I shouldn't have worried! 

Shift is a fantastic follow-up to Wool. It is actually a prequel in which Howey takes us to the heart of the trilogy and tells the story of how the silos came to be. I just love the architecture of this book (and of the whole trilogy come to think of it). Jumping back and forth before and after the silos were built is a great idea and makes for an exciting, intriguing read. 

The book is divided in three shifts. I found the first one to be the most gripping while the second one was a bit less intense. In the third shift the pace picks up again and the story begins to comes full circle with that of Silo 18. 

Although quite different from Wool, Shift is an amazing read. I can't wait to get my hands on Dust!

When I realized that Shift was not a sequel but a prequel, I was hesitating about reading it. This book gives a good background to the first novel. We get a lot more information about our silo world and personally I found this interesting. However, this book could be shorter in my opinion. Sometimes I found myself skipping ahead, other times the story went too quick in comparison with the rest of the book. Overall I enjoyed this book and it really makes me want to read the final part of the trilogy.

Oh my lord what a waste of time. I never dnf books but I've had to total nix this series. Literally nothing new just a repetition of the actions of the first book from a different perspective. What annoyed me most is the laughably predictable plot twists that are patronisingly spoon fed to the reader. 

If you're bored of watching paint dry but want a similarly dull experience I'd definitely recommend this book.

I absolutely loved Wool, the first book in this series. That left me with somewhat heightened expectations for Shift - which were unfortunately not met. The story itself is mostly a prequel - following Donald, one of the initial creators of the silos. I enjoyed how the reader is as lost as he is - trying to find out answers constantly.

What a fantastic sequel. This world is so rich with detail that I can't stop reading. The story is long and complex, but the chapters are short to encourage quick reading. I can't recommend this series enough, it's simply fantastic.

Great followup to Wool. Was a very different read at first, and certainly didn't follow any sort of formula. I liked Wool a tiny bit more, but this did a great job of explaining how the silo's came to be. And it contained so much of Howey's delightful prose.
