Paying particular attention to political structures and religious institutions, Hooker includes intricate tables of how tax dollars were spent, how hospitals and schools were run and more. As an academic botanist by trade, his journal entries describe the flora of the country; plants collected by Hooker on this trip were lost in a fire on the return voyage.
