Loveable nonsense. His rejection of growth - as if environmentally neutral or positive 
  productivity growth
 didn't exist, as if advanced technology can't stabilise and repair the damage of earlier technologies, as if material gain had no good moral effects - is fatal, and more popular now than it was in the 70s.

Although this book has some clear markers of its age (as first published in the 70s) with some mild sexism (excessive use of he's) and a little detracting from the concrete scientific content with spiritual allusions, it is a very important piece of writing that foresaw a lot of the issues going on with society today. It is somewhat depressing how little we have heeded Schumacher's extensive thinking on the subject of excessive growth. I can say this books has expanded my perspective and given me more fuel to think about the issues of capitalism and social improvement.

I thus come to the cheerful conclusion that life, including economic life, is still worth living because it is sufficiently unpredictable to be interesting.

When I first started reading this book, I suspected some perennial inspiration (Not wronged as Coomaraswamy was cited in the index). As Schumacher was passing by his theory of a new a economic model, somewhere halfway from socialism and nowadays ultra-liberalism. His attempt comes as a reaction to the excessive mass production, and the exhaustive use of non renewable resources : mainly fossil fuels.
Although the book is to some extent old fashioned when it comes to the statistics and the way economy did evolve then, it still encapsulates the essence of the current world crisis. In other words, in the light of what Schumacher is saying and stating, the last two economical crisis were very predictable. However, even today, the statistics show that humanity hasn't decided yet to change the world march towards disaster. 
At the end it comes up with a sort of applicable tactic to re-scale the economy.
All in all, an interesting book, worth reading.
