This was a tough read for me. That said, I couldn't give this less than four stars. It probably deserves higher. 

There's one character who speaks like Nathaniel Hawthorne writes; being epistolary, it's a pretty significant portion of the read .

I would not recommend for the casual reader.

The author had too much fun with the different narrators in the book, rather than condensing the story into what it should have been, maybe something like an epistolary type of novel. That being said, the contents, while they were okay, didn't keep the reader engaged as much as they should have. I felt like the underlying plot element that kept things going forward was okay, but at the same time, it still didn't leave me wanting to pick up the book, or even enjoying it, or not a book that I would recommend other people read. I'm certain that lots of other people really liked it based on the reviews I've seen. However, for me, it was far too long. You forget the initial narrator that's telling a story, and then you jump into the other characters, and many, many pages back, you lead back into this other character. It just wasn't what I wanted it to be, given the title, and even the initial parts of the book as it started, it just didn't pan out to what it should have been.

A really unique concept and completely new to me in terms of Mythos and folklore! I would've much preferred to read the physical copy of this book, though. I think the immersion and world building would feel more all-encompassing as a physical read vs the audio book, which is what I did. I would recommend and say to be prepared for some twists and unexpected turns!

To start, I really enjoyed this interpretation of vampires. As much as I love traditional representations of vampires, I’m also a fan of authors playing with the lore. Though there are supernatural elements, this story is about self-discovery at its core, with inclusions of grief, justice, forgiveness, and the possibility of breaking generational curses.

Most of this book is told through an epistolary format. While this creative decision made the story intimate and atmospheric, it also slowed the pacing to a point that made me uncomfortable. At one point, I paused and didn’t pick it up for months because the prose was too dry for me. Honestly, the perspective of the professor could’ve been cut in my opinion. She didn’t add much, and the events in the journal were paramount to the themes in the book.

Overall, the premise was extremely intriguing and worth the read, but I was expecting to be more engaged than I was.
