Sunny Side Up by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm (2015) is the start of a middle grade historical fiction graphic novel series. The book is set in the summer of 1976. In flashbacks we see Sunny with her parents and brother celebrating the bicentennial. In the present, she's in Florida at her grandfather's retirement village, for reasons that are explained slowly through the narrative.

Sunny Side Up tells the story of a young girl dealing with some heavy family issues. She's spending the summer at her grandfather and over the course of the narrative readers slowly discover what's running through her head. 

The book deals with some serious issues in a very age appropriate manner. However, I would have liked to see a bit more time spend on our protagonist's conflicts and how she started to work through them for it to have been fully effective.
