As I mentioned previously about one of Bartoletti's other book, "Black Potatoes," this is by far one of the best history books written for children that I have ever read. The book contains copious period illustrations which break up the text into fairly un-intimidating chunks to aid the child reader. The text is simple without being dumbed down. Had I not been well-versed in American Civil War and Reconstruction history prior to reading this book, I know that I would have definitely learned something new.
I highly recommend this book, especially for those parents looking to further their child's historical education.
