Engaging enough for me to finish it. I also loved that it had an actual plot, and that it didn't revolve around Raffe and Penryn's relationship. Can't wait to see what's next.

I’ve waited so long for this book like I literally was craving for it the past few months. 
Thank you Susan Ee! You spared me those dumb redundant and nonsense love triangles that seems to be a thing under all those YA sequels. Thank you really!

 First of all, I absolutely loved this book. Penryn is definitely one of the best female heroines I’ve ever read about. I seriously can’t describe how grateful I am to read about a female character that isn’t dependent from some guy because she is so “weak and fragile and blah”. Penryn has her own mind and she knows what she is doing. That’s why I didn’t mind that most of the book was about her alone because I slightly enjoyed her point of view a lot. Plus she is pretty sarcastic. (Pooky bear, I can only say)
Though as awesome Penryn is, I still missed my angel. This book has a huge lack of Raffe which made me sad at first but after thinking about it, I sort of accepted it. The Rafferyn scenes at the end was worth the waiting for him.
Awww…what am I supposed to say about those two? I love how their relationship is growing like Penryn doesn’t jump on him and wants to rip his clothes off (but actually who doesn’t wanna do that?). 

The plot was a bit slow paced at the beginning but the end was a hell of action. 


The only negative aspect I have is that I don’t know when the third book comes out…

I was waiting for this book for over a year now.
The anticipation was immense. 

But I have to say its not as great as book #1, but I think thats typical in a series.
Its also very dark and horror which I guess fits with the title, this is the world after the apocalypse. Its very different than anything else I have read. 
But I did sit and read it all in 1 day (about 13 hrs while taking care of my kids)

I know a lot of fans wants a Raffe POV, and we didn't get a real POV but his sword would share memories with Penryn which gave us a couple of moments from book 1 seen through his POV so that was a nice addition and I am sure made many fans, including me, happy!
The worst part of this book was that I had to read 75% of it before Raffe shows up!
So in the last 25% I was very giddy and enjoying my Penryn/Raffe togetherness and then the book was over!! :( Their time together in this one was too short and now I probably have to wait a year or more for the next book.

Of course this is just my impulse review because I read it through quickly. I will go back and read it slower sometime and then maybe update this.

I enjoyed Angelfall, so I continued on with the series. I was worried that the sequel would fall flat, but I did enjoy it. World After was a little gorier and grittier than Angelfall. At least it did not suffer from middle book syndrome. It was actually a little longer and meatier than Book 1. And I definitely did not feel like this book's only purpose was to lead up to Book 3. Certainly, it was building up to the finale, but it still stood on its own.

One thing I realized that I forgot to mention in my review of Angelfall was that the series is written in first person present tense. I usually try to avoid that tense; it often feels awkward and clumsy especially when combined with the simplicity of YA style. In this case, it does not detract too much from the writing. In fact, it worked well for describing Penryn's real-time commentary on her fight strategies. 

Speaking of that, the action scenes were still my favorite thing about this series. Whether it was her descriptions of the differences in fighting one opponent versus multiple opponents or her tutorials on fighting someone bigger and stronger, the fights were well researched and perfectly balanced being both informative, descriptive, and exciting. Penryn relied often on something that took me a while to realize in real life: being underestimated can be your greatest weapon. But it's their own damn fault if they don't see you as a threat. So Penryn storms her way through the enemies all the while giving helpful tips on topics such as how to exploit the fact that men have a higher center of mass than women. That is one of the things that makes this series stand out.

On a side note, I find it very interesting how so many books (from this series to Hush, Hush to The Mortal Instruments and also TV shows such as Supernatural) talk about angels and Heavenly powers while deftly dancing around any concrete discussion of God or religion. I'm not commenting on it one way or the other; I just find it intriguing that it has become a trend.

In terms of the plot, it was a little repetitive of the first book. Not to the point of being boring by any means, but there was nothing shocking or surprising in that department. The story does delve more deeply into discussions of what humanity means and how far one should go to ensure one's own survival versus the survival of one's species. 

There were still some witty moments to keep the story from getting too depressing. I loved everything to do with Pooky Bear, and the twins were awesome. I wish they would have featured more in the story.

Hopefully the third book will finish strong!

Like all sequels to books, they're hard to get back into the story. I felt a mixture of both struggle getting back into the story and just the joy of following Penryn on her journey. Again, it is so beautifully written and so powerful. The way Ee writes the protagonist is amazing. 
The background and lore about angels is also another amazing and interesting part of this book.

ARRGH !!! Books, why must your frustrate me so. Why can't you all just be great so I don't feel so goddamn conflicted !!!!!

I am so conflicted about this series still. It's literally been a year and I still don't even know if I enjoyed Angelfall ?? like da heck ??

Do I read into these things too much ? ..... probably. 
BUT ANYWAY, I'm confused about the sequel to Angelfall as well. I don't know how to feel about World After. I liked bits, I didn't like bits.

Angelfall is probably one of those books I would have loved if .... I just ...... read it during that massive Dystopian stage we all had (yes ALL had, don't tell me you didn't. It's like the teen angst stage for book lovers) after the Hunger Games but here I am in 2016 reading it and that stage is well and truly over.

Or maybe I would have loved it if I read it when I was a little younger and hadn't become bitter and hateful toward couples in books (shut up they just all make me cringe 9/10 times) 

Maybe it's just because it reminds me of Supernatural and that show NEEDS TO DIE. IT NEEDS TO GO. 

ANYWAY, something about this Angel dystopian just isn't doing it for me. The concept is cool ---- Angels come to Earth and start killing all the people. Civilisations collapse and survivors are left to survive in a war torn world full of hostile Angels. But I just ... cannot get into it.

And it's a shame because EVERYONE ELSE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO

I don't think I liked this as much as Angelfall, and I feel like the plot was literally Angelfall rehashed. The events that happened in Angelfall were just repeated .... it felt like someone had regifted a present and tried to hide it by using new wrapping. This definitely felt like a second book slump. Not much happened at all.

→ leaving plots hanging ... . This is SUCH a massive hate of mine. If you're gonna start a MASSIVE plot line .... finish it ?? I hate lose ends. Anyway, there was an enormous plot set up with the prison escape, and it could have been awesome. Instead the whole thing happened off screen and wasn't even concluded or resolved ?? tf ?? I felt that the scorpion victims were the same thing .. just a big plot point that had no resolution. I hate that. If you're gonna start something THEN GODDAMN FINISH IT

→ I hate the romance. Penryn and Raffe are the not the worst. I've seen much worse. But not the best either. While I don't hate them all the time, they did make me roll my eyes and cringe and I just HATE THAT. 

→ The plot wasn't the best. As mentioned, it followed the exact same structure as book 1. Penryn's sister gets kidnapped, Penryn goes to save sister, Penryn goes to party dressed up, Penryn has to leave party. Raffe is there. ALL THE INTERESTING PLOT WAS DROPPED ??? M8 we could of had it all with that Alcatraz plot and instead it was vaguely left behind. 

Also, things just happened incredibly conveniently ? Like, everytime a problem arose a quick and easy solution would just .. come along. It just didn't feel realistic to me. 

This whole book just felt a bit vague and wishy washy, like it didn't know where it was going itself. 

→ Speaking of unrealistic ...  some things just seem ... stupid. Like Paige became a dedicated vegetarian at the age of THREE. what the fuck she did not. three year olds shove whatever the frick they want in their mouth they do not have the mental ability to be like "shit man, I'm becoming a dedicated vegetarian because the way our agriculture industry treats animals is immoral and cruel"

Also ... Penryn just kills grown ass men or ten at a time and she magically defeats killer Angels out of nowhere and it's like ????? really ?????


  
    THINGS I LIKED
  


→ characters. I genuinely like Penryn as a character. While she has her whiny, annoying moments, overall she is a bamf and I like her sense of humour. I think I complained about her being too Katniss in my Angellfall review? Well, I'm happy to take that back. She stands as her own character and I really like her.

I also really like Dee and Dum. And while they're just support characters they're cool kids and I like them. 

→ The gore. This is not for the faint of heart. There is some messed up things going on. People becoming scorpion monsters, stitching up kids faces, torturing angels, people getting brutally murdered by aforementioned scorpion people. It's seriously freaky, but also I'm seriously here for it. 

→ It's heading in a good direction. It feels like the ending did set up the third and final book, End of Days quite well, and introduced an overarching plot which can carry is through to the end. It's unfortunate those didn't come along earlier. Anyway, it looks to be heading for a massive conclusion, and I'm glad there's "more to this" then originally shown. 

→ yeah thats like it lol. 


 

This book was not BAD  by any means, and there were some scenes I genuinely really loved and some plot points that hit that mark a bit better I just thought overall it could have been stronger.

It didn't feel as strong as Angelfall, it just felt a bit directionless. To me, this series isn't shining by any means but it's also not awful. It's just solidly in the middle. I don't see myself picking up the final book with any anticipation, but I also DO see myself finishing this series. It's just a bit hit and miss as a series for me.

Raffe. AHHHHH. I forgot how much I missed the interactions between Penryn and him omggg. I’d say this is a very close 5 star rating but the only reason it isn’t is because my angst-loving heart just wanted a bit more angst with their reunion as well as the fact that I didn’t feel as immersed in the story as I did in book one (lots of confusion worldbuilding and scenes I struggled to picture). But other than that I loved it (especially how so many elements and questions I had from book one all came together!!) 

Slightly terrified of the last book, idk why, Ee just strikes me as an author who likes bad endings.

I read most of this book in a day. Each character had a meaning, they are all different and flawed in their own way but the book seems to tell us to accept each other for our flaws. No one is perfect. The plot, in my opinion, had no weak spots, it was good through and through.

This is a perfect example of a great sequel to an amazing series. Ee did it again and made a hella great book! Penryn is so bad-ass that she can't even die! Ok, ok I know there were special circumstances and it was just luck but come on! I'm convinced Penryn will and can survive anything. After the whole dying thing, people are still pretty weary of Penryn because it's not everyday you see someone waking up from the dead, no matter the circumstances. 

We learn a lot in this book, we learn more about Raffe and his brothers and past, which is nice because he feels more trustworthy and it seems like we really know his motives concerning Penryn are true and meaningful. It's pretty clear when the last book ended, that Raffe feels something for Penryn. Of course, the most anticipated thing in this book, for me at least, was the big reveal to Raffe that Penryn is alive. Which by the way guys, did not disappoint. It was very well written and even though the little love-sick girl in me wanted the reunion faster, it did happen at the perfect time and was well-paced for the plot line to thicken. 

Now, the big question of the book is will the need for Raffe's wings overcome the love he has for Penryn? As usual, our protagonist finds herself in a tough and life threatening situation and Raffe's decision is critical. Aside from that, Penryn, as usual, was amazing and bad-ass. She kicked many butts and conquered many accomplishments. I liked her dynamic relationship with Obi. They respect each other which made me in turn respect Obi a lot more than in the first book. He ultimately wants to help his race, his people and it does shows. He trusts Penryn, which is good because he can clearly tell that if anyone can stop the apocalypse it's Penryn or at least her influence on Raffe. 

Paige, Penryn's sister, really shone in this book! She came out of her shell, even after the horrific things that had been done to her. I really liked her lines and how empowering she was to everyone, almost like a beacon of hope and light, no matter how she looks. Of course we have problems with the other people who don't agree with keeping her alive, solely because she looks like a monster. That was just so heartbreaking to read and sad to see that her confidence would deflate just a little. But rest assured Paige rises stronger than ever and she really is a huge player in the storyline. 

To end this review, I'm just going to share a quote Raffe said to Penryn after finding out his sword's name is called... Pooky Bear..., enjoy:

“He glares at me as if he already hates it. “What is it?” I consider lying but what’s the point? I clear my throat. “Pooky Bear"
He’s silent for so long I’m beginning to think he didn’t hear me when he finally says, “Pooky. Bear.” “It was just a little joke. I didn’t know.” 
“I’ve mentioned that names have power, right? Do you realize that when she fights battles, she’s going to have to announce herself to the opposing sword? She’ll be forced to say something ridiculous like, ‘I am Pooky Bear, from an ancient line of archangel swords.’ Or, ‘Bow down to me, Pooky Bear, who has only two other equals in all the worlds.’ ” He shakes his head."

HAHAHAHAHAHAH GUYS, just read it, please.

Even better than the 1st one! I like the creepiness of this book, we finally have a smart and kickass heroine, which is a rare thing these days. Oh, and a Pooky Bear? Seriously? THAT was hilarious! =)
