I am a huge admirer of Margaret Whitlam. This book shows readers how two people can survive many adversities and come through the other side - battle scarred but wiser. Gough was very much the volatile one, whereas she was the no nonsense, matter of fact and calm one. Margaret is a person that did so much behind the scenes, especially in social services and got virtually no recognition for it until much later in life. Underneath her demeanour she was truly a romantic at heart. For me Gough and Margaret were definitely a yin-yang couple, they complimented each other beautifully as well as having a loving marriage that lasted many, many years.
