His lips soften into a smile. He repeats my name like the word amuses him. Entertains him. Delights him.

I clench my jaw, not trusting myself to speak.

He raises his eyebrows. "At least I'm honest about being a liar."

The wind folds itself into my arms and smiles against my skin. Cool, silky-smooth air braids a soft breeze through my hair. This square courtyard could be my ballroom.

"Life is a bleak place," he whispers. "Sometimes you have to learn how to shoot first."

"You're absolutely delicious when you're angry."

"Too bad my taste is poisonous for your palate." I'm vibrating in disgust from head to toe.

"That detail makes this game so much more appealing."

"I've wanted to kiss you for so long." His voice is husky, uneven, deep in my ear.

"God, Juliette, I'd follow you anywhere. You're the only good thing left in this world."

"You think I'm some kind of freak you can show off to your friends?"

Kenii clears his throat. "Not a freak. Just . . . interesting." I point my gun at his nose. "I'm so interesting I can kill you with my bare hands."

A barely perceptible flash of fear flickers in his eyes.

Kenji grins. Looks me up and down. "Well damn. But you make crazy sound so good?

"I'm about five inches from breaking your face," Adam warns him, his body stiff with anger, his eyes narrowed, unflinching. "I don't need another reason."

"What?" Kenji laughs, undeterred. "I haven't been this close to a chick in way too long, bro. And crazy or not-"

Kenji turns to face me. "Well I'm not sure I blame you. I look like hell right now. But I clean up okay." He attempts a grin. "Give me a couple days. You might change your mind-"

Adam elbows him in the face and doesn't apologize.

"No.” he whispers, hot hot hot against my lips. "You look like a superhero."

The writing style is very different from what I’m used to… not sure if it’s a representation of the character in the book and how she thinks, or the author herself. 

Anyway, it was actually pretty good. I couldn’t put the book down.

I was curious if this book would live up to the hype and I have to say it did not disappoint! This hooked me from the first sentence and kept that grip through-out the entirety of it. Our protagonist has a strange and terrifying power in her touch, leaving her sought after and imprisoned. The mystery and action in this was so good. The author truly knows how to weave a truly captivating story! I'm eagerly planning to read the rest of this series!

I have actually put this series off for a year, but finally i’m starting it. I hear so many good things about these books, and so i definitely have high hopes and i’m scared i might be let down. However, so far the series is good, i know some spoilers, because it’s highly talked about. Right now i kind of like Warner but kind of don’t, i don’t know i’m really looking forward to his character development and everything that happens. I am being kind of harsh with my rating, i don’t know why, i enjoyed the book and i was so excited to continue reading it, but i feel like it was too fast-paced for me if that makes any sense? and didn’t draw me in as much as other books do. Though, don’t get me wrong 3 stars is not bad at all.

Was a new kinda story. It was a mix of X-Men and end of times world break down apocalypse. I didn't hate it but I can't say I loved it that much.

it wasn't bad, but it wasn't the most exceptional book I've ever read. I did love the characters, and I found Juliette to be very heartbreaking however. I find that Mafi's writting does create a huge atmosphere of empathy, and her way of formulating this by showing how Juliette's mind is, how much of a mess it is, it does bring this book up to another level. Not much really happened in this book. It was just an introduction to the entire story, more like a novella than anything. The action that did happen felt broken and a little fluffy, but I think as the books go on it'll feel like that less especially as we begin to become more involved in the characters. 

However, I absolutely adore Kenji. Immediatly into his introduction, he all of a sudden brings this atmosphere and hilarious vibe into the book. He lightens the mood and it's so charming. HIS BOLD FLIRTATION WITH JULIETTE>>> (btw can i just say that Kent is a teeeeny tiiiny bit annoying, LIKE I LOVE HIM ESPECIALLY BC HOW HE TREATS JULIETTE BUUUT IT'S JUST A LITTLE INTENSE but like he's not bad HE'S LIKE AMAZING FOR JULIETTE. 

also adam warner can kill himself and thats on gaslighting 😢 BRO REALLY TRIED TO GASLIGHT JULIETTE INTO BEING A MONSTER... and that scene with the toddler in the torture chamber 💔 BUT WHEN SHE SMASHED THROUGH 5FT OF CONCRETE 💪🏽 power move. wish i saw Warner's face(s). xxx

OVERALL, this book had some character and was a little bit of a drag. The first book of a series is rarely the most gorgeous, amazing book i've ever read. Hats off to Mafi, however.

you know this feeling where the book is a 5 star read but not the 5 stars you expected it to be? We’ll booktok made me think that this book is soo good and that Kenji is amazing and Adam is sweet. But Kenji was barley there and Adam was sweet but knowing all the spoilers is just annoying that I find Warner hot, even tho what he had don. And all because of booktok. It was a 5 star read, but no like I expected it to be.
