I really wanted this to be an exceptional book. I was disappointed. It was a good book but was really more of a broad history of the integration of the army during World War II with a sprinkling of injustices the U.S. Government committed on its own people during the war. I don't disagree with the things they addressed, I just felt they muddled the book and made it read more like a less engaging history text book than exciting narrative nonfiction a teenager would willingly pick up on their own. I agree with a review I read prior to reading this book that said it was nominated because of the topic it covered and not necessarily the quality of writing about the topic.

The source notes alone make this a good book to have in any middle or high school library but know it will mostly be used for reference and not a pleasure read.
