The writer's intentional intrusiveness is both charming and a bit of a distraction; it is possible for one's effusiveness about his subject to overshadow even the person one is talking about. Part 'biography of a great man' and part leadership manual, this book makes Churchill's life an adventure story interspersed with sufficient tender moments, near-misses and failures to make him almost like us. (Although one gets the sense from the writer that Churchill is perhaps one of the greatest men ever lived, one wonders whether it would be overreach to continually rise to his defense all the time. Admirable people from history have their weaknesses too.) It is the kind of book on serious recommendation for young inquisitive twelve-year-olds, although they are not the intended audience - they will enjoy the pace and thrills, be swept away by the enthusiasm, and learn some history at the same time. Unfortunately this reader is in another age bracket and prefers her history writers more invisible.
