This book switches style less than half way through it and after reading over 800 pages, I would have thought that there would have been an ending.

This really is a lengthy read but what a vivid recreation of the 19th century! From the very first line I was completely immersed in the story and just couldn't put the book down. Michel Faber's writing is absolutely amazing and makes the reader feel like he/she is actually taking part in the development of the story.

It was a compelling read, aside from the sometimes condescending narration. I was able to connect with the main characters, and was prety much gripped to reading it for the last 200 pages. The biggest problem for me was the ending, which was rather empty after the long 834 pages of material and the months it took of on-and-off reading to finish it.

It's just too long-winded with every single detail described. Important or not.
Michel Faber makes you believe you're in Victorian London and his descriptions of everyday life and tasks are almost murakami-esque without the charm.
I just can't see myself finishing it and the main reason is that I don't give a 🐀's ass about any of the characters.
Sadly not my kind of book - I had high hopes 😔
